At the foot of the mountain, a small spring begins to rise. The water is fresh and alive, full of curiosity and movement, carrying a natural desire to flow. At this early stage, it doesn’t yet have a clear direction, and that’s part of its nature. It explores, spreads, and learns its way forward through movement itself.
Above the spring stands the mountain, steady and shaped by time and experience. Its presence offers a reference point, a form, a rhythm. Without forcing anything, it gives the water a direction to follow. Slowly, the spring learns how to gather, how to deepen, how to flow within a path that allows it to travel further.
This is the image of Hexagram 4 in the I Ching. It speaks to the moment of being a learner, when curiosity is strong, questions are alive, and understanding is still taking shape. Learning unfolds through patience and humility, through accepting guidance and allowing experience to do its work.
For me, it’s a gentle reminder that we grow through openness and steadiness, and that being a student is not a phase we outgrow, but a posture we keep coming back to 🌱
