Conflicts in Relationships in the Works of Jane Austen
Humanities provide us with an external perspective on our lives and the relationships that surround us. Literature, like philosophy and art, offers a unique lens through which we can better understand the complexity of both existential and everyday relationships, intertwined and enmeshed within social and political frameworks.
I invite you to a five-session workshop, offered once in Hebrew and once in English, where we will explore Jane Austen's masterpiece, Pride and Prejudice, and analyze the conflicts that arise in the relationships among the characters.
Every relationship has conflicts—some more pronounced than others. Focusing on these conflicts through a caring lens is often overlooked in both private and public discourse on relationships. If we acknowledge that we live in a web of interconnected relationships—where each individual influences others—then navigating this maze can help dismantle socio-political barriers. Austen illustrates that we are surrounded by both hidden and visible factors that disrupt relationships, which can even lead to social and political changes.
For example, gossip is deeply entrenched in her books. It is an important element of human relationships, and in Austen’s works, it has both negative and positive facets. Gossip shapes our everyday personal, social, and political lives.
In Pride and Prejudice (and I’ll try not to be a spoiler), as in her other works, socio-economic status and beauty often stand in the way of love against all odds. However, love in her stories transcends these barriers. Moreover, love can act like a snowball, challenging hegemonic classes and hierarchies as it gains momentum.
There is a new and controversial American series called Nobody Wants This. It features a Reform and liberal rabbi, nicknamed the "Hot Rabbi" (Hollywood is Hollywood), who falls in love with a non-Jewish white woman. Here too, love faces social, cultural, and even political obstacles. Yet, love remains a powerful emotion that can potentially drive people to break down barriers.
Austen, like the characters in the new series, shows us that even love is subject to dominant hegemony. Therefore, "caring" processes are essential for effectively integrating conflict management in relationships at every level.

קונפליקטים במערכות יחסים אצל ג'יין אוסטן
מדעי הרוח נותנים לנו מבט חוץ שמשקף את המבט הפנימי על חיינו ומערכות היחסים העוטפות אותנו. הסיפרות כמו הפילוסופיה והאמנות, נותנים לנו מבט חוץ על המורכבות של מערכות יחסים קיומיות ויומיומיות אבל גם חברתיות ופוליטיות.
אני מזמינה אתכם לצלילה של סדנא בת 5 מפגשים, אחת בעברית ואחת באנגלית, לתוך ספר המופת של אוסטן, גאווה ודעה קדומה, שתלמד אותנו על קונפליקטים במערכות יחסים מהגישה של caring.
ג'יין אוסטן, הרבה יותר מסופרת של סיפורי אהבה. לאהבה היא מתייחסת כמניע חתרני להסרת מחסומים בין אנשים. אוסטן מלמדת אותנו שקונפליקטים במערכות יחסים, הם מיזוג מובנה של חיי היום יום, חברה ופוליטיקה. כשמתייחסים לקונפליקטים מהגישה של caring, יש אפשרות למוסס חומות. נקודת המוצא היא שאנחנו חיים ברשת מסועפת של מערכות קשרים וכל קשר משפיע על קשרים אחרים.
בכל מערכת יחסים יש קונפליקטים. חלקם מכילים יותר וחלקם פחות. ההתמקדות בקונפליקטים במערכות יחסים היא נקודת מבט שחסרה פעמים רבות בשיח הציבורי כתשתית של התנהלות אנושית, הן בקשרים פרטיים והן ציבוריים, ברבדים שונים בחיים. אבל אוסטן מלמדת אותנו שאנו מוקפים בגורמים סמויים וגלויים שיוצרים שיבושים במערכות יחסים שיכולים אף להוביל לשינויים חברתיים ופוליטיים.
למשל, השימוש ברכילות. זהו מרכיב חשוב בקשרים אנושיים, ואצל אוסטן היא רבת פנים. יש לה פן שלילי אבל גם חיובי. כך גם מרכיבים אחרים יומיומיים שמנהלים את חיינו האישיים, החברתיים והפוליטיים.
ב"גאווה ודעה וקדומה" (ואנסה לא לעשות ספויילר), כמו בספרים אחרים שלה, מעמד חברתי-כלכלי ויופי עומדים לרועץ מול התאהבות כנגד כל הסיכויים. אצל אוסטן, האהבה היא זו שמחייבת אנשים להפתח ולמוסס חומות. האהבה, אצלה, משנה את החברה ומסייעת לגשר בין בני ובנות אנוש.
גם הסידרה האמריקאית החדשה והחביבה שנקראת Nobody Wants This, יוצרת תהודה רבה, בגלל האהבה כנגד כל הסיכויים. רב רפורמי וליברל, שנתפס כ- Hot Rabbi (הוליווד זו הוליווד), מתאהב באישה לא יהודיה לבנה. גם פה האהבה נתקלת בקשיים חברתיים, תרבותיים ואף פוליטיים. אבל היא גם רגש חזק שדוחף אנשים למוסס מחסומים.
לכאורה, תמוה מדוע אנשים מתאהבים לא יכולים לממש את אהבתם? אוסטן, כמו הדמויות בסידרה, מלמדת שגם אהבה כפופה לתכתיבים של הגמוניה שלטת, על פי רוב פטריארכלית, המכתיבה סדר יום על פי האינטרסים שלה. לכן, תהליכים של caring חיוניים לשילוב בהתמודדות עם קונפליקטים במערכות יחסים, בכל רובד.
הסדנא בעברית תתקיים בימי שני בנובמבר (אעדכן לגבי תאריכים מדויקים בהמשך), בספריה העירונית של תל-אביב בבנין כלבו שלום, ברחוב אחד העם.
