🦷 מיתוסים על כירורגיית פה ולסת – הגיע הזמן לעשות סדר

תחום כירורגיית הפה והלסתות שבו אני עוסקת מזה שנים רבות בדומה להייטק, מתקדם ומתפתח בקצב מרשים, מלא בחדשנות, ידע ודיוק – אך לצערי ממשיכים להתקיים מיתוסים ותפיסות שגויות שגורמים לבלבול רב בקרב מטופלים רבים, מה שמוביל לא פעם לדחיית טיפול חיוני או לבחירות לא מדוייקות.

🔹 מיתוס 1" : כירורגיית פה ולסת היא רק למקרים קשים וחריגים"
🚫 לא נכון! התחום כולל גם טיפולים נפוצים כגון השתלות שיניים, השתלות עצם, טיפול במחוסרי שיניים, עקירות כירורגיות, עקירות שיני בינה כמו גם טיפולים מניעתיים ואסתטיים כאשר הם מבוצעים בשלבים מוקדמים בהחלט יכולים לחסוך סבל בעתיד.
🔹 מיתוס 2" : הטיפולים תמיד כואבים וקשים להחלמה"
🚫 לא נכון! היום, בזכות טכנולוגיות מתקדמות, הדמיות תלת־ממד, הרדמה מותאמת אישית כולל סדציה עמוקה והרדמה כללית, רוב ההליכים מבוצעים בדיוק מירבי, בליווי טיפולים ביולוגיים של Platelet-Rich Plasma(PRP) ו- Platelet-Rich Fibrin (PRF) ואפילו BMA המקדמים ריפוי מואץ והתחדשות רקמות .טיפולים אלו מנצלים את הפוטנציאל הטבעי של הגוף לריפוי, על ידי שימוש בחומרים טבעיים המופקים מדמו או ממח העצם של המטופל/ת עצמו/ה.
🔹 מיתוס 3 : "אם אין כאב – אין בעיה"
🚫טעות נפוצה. חלק מהבעיות הרציניות ביותר בפנים, בלסתות ובלסת התחתונה – אינן מורגשות בשלבים הראשונים. דווקא אבחון וטיפול מוקדם עושה את ההבדל.
🔹 מיתוס 4: "אני מעדיף את רופא השיניים שלי"
🚫לא תמיד. כמו ברפואה, חלק ניכר מהבעיות נפתרות על ידי רופא משפחה, אך לעיתים קרובות יש צורך במומחה. טיפול בשיניים בקרבה לעצב, הרמת רצפת הסינוס, שתלים במצבים או מטופלים עם בעיות מורכבות, ניתוחים ועוד – מצריכים מומחה לכירורגית פה ולסתות, שמבין את האנטומיה העמוקה והמורכבת של האזור.
🔹מיתוס 5: "אם אין לי עצם – אי אפשר לעשות שתלים"
🚫 לא נכון! היום, גם במקרים של חוסר עצם קיצוני, יש פתרונות מתקדמים לבניית עצם, הרמת רצפת הסינוס ופתרונות מותאמים גם למצבים הקיצוניים ביותר.
🔹מיתוס 6: "ניתוח לתיקון עמדת הלסתות (אורתוכירורגי) זה רק אסתטיקה"
🚫לא נכון! ניתוחי פה ולסת עוסקים בראש ובראשונה בבריאות – תפקוד, נשימה, דיבור, לעיסה ופתרון בעיות מבניות. במקרים רבים, מדובר בטיפול רפואי הכרחי:
– לתיקון סגר לקוי שמשפיע על לעיסה ודיבור
– לטיפול בהפרעות נשימה, דום נשימה בשינה או קושי בנשימה
– לתיקון אסימטריה מבנית מולדת או נרכשת
המרכיב האסתטי – חשוב ככל שיהיה – הוא רק חלק מהתמונה הכוללת.
המטרה היא לשפר תפקוד, בריאות ואיכות חיים – ולא רק מראה חיצוני.

🦷 Myths About Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery – Time to Set the Record Straight

The field of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, which I’ve been practicing for many years, is advancing at an impressive pace—much like the high-tech industry—full of innovation, knowledge, and precision. Yet, unfortunately, various myths and misconceptions still persist, causing confusion among many patients. These misconceptions often lead to unnecessary delays in treatment or inaccurate decisions.
So let’s debunk a few of them together 👇
🔹 Myth 1: "Oral and maxillofacial surgery is only for extreme or rare cases."
🚫 Not true! The field also includes common procedures such as dental implants, bone grafting, treatment for edentulous patients, surgical tooth extractions, wisdom teeth removal, and even preventive and aesthetic treatments. When performed early, these can prevent future complications.
🔹 Myth 2: "Treatments are always painful and hard to recover from."
🚫 Wrong again! Today, thanks to advanced technologies, 3D imaging, and personalized anesthesia (including deep sedation and general anesthesia), most procedures are performed with maximum precision. They're also supported by biological treatments like Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP), Platelet-Rich Fibrin (PRF), and even Bone Marrow Aspiration (BMA), which promote faster healing and tissue regeneration. These treatments harness the body’s natural healing potential using substances derived from the patient’s own blood or bone marrow.
🔹 Myth 3: "If there’s no pain, there’s no problem."
🚫 A common mistake. Some of the most serious conditions involving the face, jaws, and lower jaw are symptom-free in their early stages. Early diagnosis and intervention can make all the difference.
🔹 Myth 4: "I prefer my general dentist."
🚫 Not always the best choice. Just like in general medicine, many issues can be handled by a primary care provider, but some require a specialist. Treatments near the nerve, sinus floor elevations, implants in complex anatomical or systemic cases, and surgeries—these require an oral and maxillofacial surgeon who deeply understands the complex anatomy of the area.
🔹 Myth 5: "If I don’t have enough bone, implants are impossible."
🚫 Incorrect! Even in cases of severe bone loss, there are advanced solutions for bone augmentation, sinus lifts, and customized approaches—even for the most extreme situations.
🔹 Myth 6: "Jaw alignment (orthognathic) surgery is only for cosmetic purposes."
🚫 Not true! Oral and maxillofacial surgery is first and foremost about health—function, breathing, speech, chewing, and correcting structural problems. In many cases, it’s a medical necessity:
– To correct malocclusion affecting chewing and speech
– To treat breathing disorders, sleep apnea, or difficulty breathing
– To correct congenital or acquired facial asymmetry
The aesthetic component—important as it may be—is just one part of the overall picture.
The true goal is to improve function, health, and quality of life—not just appearance.
Remember: Accurate diagnosis at the right time can change the course of treatment—and sometimes even the course of life.
