One year ago, I went on the "Masada Sunrise" tour with the company I work for (Abraham Tours). On the hike back down the mountain fortress, I spoke with a fascinating Chinese man who had immigrated to Canada. He was a reconstructive surgeon and a Buddhist. I had asked him what him what his thoughts were when "inner resistance meets desire" and later he wrote me an email saying something simple but powerful that I keep going back to:
"I think you raise interesting questions, and in regards to your last question, I see it as sort of "scenario and solution". Actually, this is just how the Buddha taught his followers and why he left behind him a huge volume of sutra... All these sutra are just recordings of what he said when he was asked questions by his followers.
However, to the essence of the Buddhism, the truth of the world is simple and the more peaceful you are, the more deeper you can see. If our heart and mind is a lake, the outside world is wind and rain. With the wind and rain, the lake water waves and when there is no wind and rain, the peaceful lake reflect the sky, mountain, trees, everything...I am sorry I cannot express very elegantly due to my sub-optimal English :P
So, to make things simple, it's helpful to focus on meaningful ideas and distinguish between the real aim of life and the attraction of the outside world. Ask yourself if what you desire is really valuable or just dispensable... I think we can get rid of most of the desires this way since if you think it over, most of them are not really important."
