What PTSD Looks Like in Israel Right Now

Since October 7th, trauma has rewired our nation.

Yes for soldiers.
Yes for victims.
Yes, everyone.

Family members, children, caregivers, and bystanders are all absorbing trauma in different ways.

💔 Flinching at the sound of an ambulance, or even a door slamming. Sirens live in their bones.
💔 Trapped in fight-or-flight mode. Just locked in survival.
💔 Exhaustion. Anxiety. Depression. Not always visible, but always there.

In the U.S., PTSD is considered an outlier.
In Israel? It’s a baseline.

1 in 3 Israelis is either suffering from or at high risk for PTSD.

We need to recognize the signs, talk about what we’re seeing, and show up for ourselves, our families, and this country, still learning how to breathe again.

We’ve been seeing something heartbreaking: clients who had found stability are suddenly back in crisis.
Why? Because once again, the war has intensified.
💔 Mothers of soldiers paralyzed with fear
💔 Teens turning to self-harm, overwhelmed by powerlessness
💔 Fathers silently unraveling under financial and emotional strain
And layered on top of all this, the Chagim can stir up loneliness, instability, and pain.
So this Shavuot, we’re asking something simple, powerful, and deeply Jewish:
Tefilah.
We’ve created a confidential Avnei Chein Tefilah List for anyone struggling with mental illness. Names will not be read aloud. They will be prayed for as a group “Refuah Sheleimah b’Briut HaGuf v’haNefesh.”
🕯Join us in prayer.
📎Submit names anonymously here: https://forms.gle/xESwuwgBnoiHDVW26
Because as Jews, we don’t pray instead of taking action.
We pray alongside it.

May Igor's memory be a blessing. Israeli society is struggling with an unprecedented national trauma. Nobody, not one person, can say they have been unaffected. This touches us all.

St.-Sgt.-Maj. Igor Pivnev shared his story of heroism several times. But friends and family now believe he kept much of his pain to himself—until the emotional toll became too much.

We always knew that Avnei Chein was crucial in helping people find stability during a mental health crisis.

But recently, we decided to ask a bold question: Is our work truly as life-saving as we believe it is?

The results? We were floored.
✨ 97% of our clients said they would recommend us to others going through a mental health crisis.

That’s not just a number. It’s proof that what we do matters. That showing up, guiding families, and being the community for those in pain… changes lives.

We’re here. We see you. And we’ll keep walking with you, until stability is not just possible, but real. 🫶

Pesach is a time when we remember what it means to break free from the chains of bo***ge and step into the light of redemption.

But what if modern day slavery isn’t just physical? What if it lives in the mind?

For those battling mental illness or post-trauma, freedom can feel heartbreakingly out of reach. Their thoughts trap them. Their moods betray them. They long for stability, but instead find themselves stuck in a painful cycle of fear, shame, and helplessness.

People in mental health crisis often feel they are enslaved, not in Egypt, but in their own minds.

And just like our ancestors, they need someone to walk with them, to guide them toward stability, and to remind them that freedom is not only possible but promised.

Today, for those struggling with mental illness in Israel, trying to access disability support through Bituach Leumi can feel like wandering the desert, without a path forward and without a miracle in sight. The journey is so confusing, exhausting, and filled with bureaucratic hurdles that 90% of trauma victims in Israel don’t even seek help, due to long wait times and a lack of trust in the system.

This is where Avnei Chein’s Case Management steps in.

Case Management is a multidimensional professional and personalized service that includes support: navigating the system, guiding families through their darkest hours, creating treatment plans for clients, and holding their hand every step of the way toward stability.

Without Case Management, people struggling might are wander the desert of bureaucracy for years; alone, lost, and un-helped.

People in mental health crisis need someone to help them navigate the system, instill confidence, and walk with them toward stability.

Case Management is that guide.
It is the bridge between crisis and redemption.

Donate To Avnei Chein this Pesach and be a part of someone's journey from crisis to stability.

We walk alongside families facing a mental health crisis, ensuring they receive the support, guidance, and care they need every step of the way.

Here’s how our process works:

🔹 Step 1: A family member or individual in crisis calls our crisis support line. We provide immediate assistance and pair them with a dedicated Case Manager.

🔹 Step 2: The Case Manager meets with the individual and/or their family to assess their needs and create a customized treatment plan. This roadmap to stability includes:

✅ Types of therapy recommended
✅ NGOs & resources tailored to the specific case
✅ A structured path forward to ensure the best care

🔹 Step 3: The family begins navigating the treatment plan, with hands-on support from the Case Manager, securing access to services, monitoring progress, and consulting our Medical Advisory Board to explore the best treatment options.

🔹 Step 4: Throughout the journey, our Case Managers assess progress, ensuring that both the individual and the family receive effective treatment and support. We collaborate with therapists, psychiatrists, and healthcare professionals to maximize the impact of care.

🔹 Step 5: Families move toward recovery and stability, gaining the tools they need to manage life independently and confidently.

Our Case Managers eliminate the stress of navigating multiple offices and professionals alone. They become the go-to resource, ensuring that families always have a knowledgeable, caring, and available POC to guide them.

📌 With mental health often involving ups and downs, this process may repeat with the same client as needed.

We recognize that when one family member struggles with mental health, the entire family is affected. That’s why our approach goes beyond supporting the individual—we support the whole family unit.

One of our core values is helping families stay together and stay connected throughout their journey toward stability. Through dedicated case management, guidance, and holistic support, we ensure that families don’t just navigate the crisis—they feel empowered, supported, and strengthened as a unit.

How We Support Families:

✅ Parental Guidance & Support Networks – Our case managers provide guidance to parents, connecting them with support groups and ensuring they have a network to lean on.
✅ Sibling Check-ins – We make sure that siblings are also processing and coping with their family member’s diagnosis, offering them the support they need.
✅ Practical Support – We partner with babysitting services and other creative solutions to help families function as normally as possible.
✅ Meal Assistance – For clients who are overwhelmed and unable to manage, we arrange food deliveries to ease their burden.

By strengthening family dynamics and providing the tools for resilience, we help prevent families from breaking apart during difficult times.

What’s an Case Manager? And how do we actually provide crisis support?

Individuals and families who come to us at (ארגון בריאות נפש ישראל) are often faced with complex mental health challenges that can be overwhelming to navigate on their own💔.

Think about it. They or their loved one are facing a difficult mental health challenge, and they have no idea where to turn to next.

Not to mention how isolated they feel in this experience.

🏥📑The Israeli system is overburdened, and cases can be overlooked or “pending” for months.

This is where an Avnei Chein Case Manager plays a vital role in providing essential support and guidance:

📞 They are dedicated professionals who serve as a central point of contact for individuals and families seeking mental health crisis intervention.

💙 They work closely with our clients to assess their needs and the needs of their loved ones, develop personalized treatment plans, and coordinate a range of support services to help them achieve stability and wellbeing.

💙 They serve as advocates and liaisons for individuals and families, helping them access the resources and care they need to address their mental health concerns effectively.

💙They collaborate with various healthcare providers, social services, and community organizations to ensure that clients receive comprehensive and holistic support.

For individuals and families who are feeling overwhelmed or unsure about where to turn for help, a Case Manager provides reassurance and practical assistance every step of the way.

From crisis ➡️ to stability.

Avnei Chein - Mental Health Crisis Support

The mental health “system” and related services create a confusing and bureaucratic black hole. The services are disconnected from each other, leaving the public without a clear navigation path to healing.

There is an enormous knowledge gap regarding the availability of services, the needs and rights of people suffering in a moment of crisis and the needs and rights of their families.

Our goal is to create a service that will advocate, guide, and accompany clients and families through the initial dark moments of crisis to the point where they can survive and flourish independently.
