Melanocytic Nevus are usually non-cancerous disorder of pigment-producing skin cells commonly called birthmarks or moles.
This type of mole is often large and caused by a disorder involving melanocytes, cells that produce pigment (melanin).

Melanocytic nevi can be rough, flat, or raised. They can exist at birth or appear later. They can have thick hair on them. Rarely, melanocytic nevi can become cancerous.

Most cases don't require treatment, but some cases require removal of the mole.

Neurofibromatoses a genetic condition where these harmless spots are common in many people. But having more than six cafe au lait spots suggests NF1. They often are present at birth or appear during the first years of life. After childhood, new spots stop appearing.
