LASIK surgery can truly change your daily life — but only when it’s done for the right candidate.
As an ophthalmologist, my first priority is safety, and that starts with deciding whether your eyes are suitable for LASIK (or whether another option like SMILE / PRK / ICL would be safer for you).
✅ Who is usually eligible for LASIK?
1) Right age group above 18 years of age
2) Stable spectacle number
Your glasses number should be stable for at least 1 year.
If your power is still changing, it’s better to wait, otherwise the number can return after surgery.
3) Healthy cornea
Normal corneal shape on topography/tomography (corneal mapping)
This step is critical because LASIK on an unsuitable cornea can increase the risk of corneal ectasia.
4) Adequate corneal thickness + safe calculations
If the cornea is borderline, you may still be suitable for PRK/TransPRK or ICL instead of LASIK.
5) Healthy tear film (dry eye evaluation) we assess and treat dryness first.
6) Overall eye health check
We rule out conditions like:
Active infection/inflammation (conjunctivitis, uveitis)
Significant corneal scars
Cataract or other causes of blurred vision
Retinal issues (especially in high myopia) — a retinal exam is must.
When LASIK is usually NOT advised / should be postponed
1.Unstable spectacle power
2.Keratoconus / suspicious corneal map
3.Very thin cornea / unsafe residual thickness
4.Severe dry eye not controlled with treatment
5.Pregnancy / breastfeeding
6.Certain systemic conditions affecting healing (case-by-case, after detailed evaluation)
📌 Bottom line
If you’re considering LASIK, don’t decide based on someone else’s experience — your cornea and tear film decide your suitability.
If LASIK isn’t ideal for you, we can guide you toward safer alternatives like ICL depending on your eye parameters.
