April was a month filled with Academic exchanges and meeting with colleagues and seniors in person after the pandemic-led long break. It started with another episode of conducting the PULSE module at Rajkot, a wonderful case based discussion with prominent ped super specialists of the city and ending with an enriching full day annual conference of AOP Ahmedabad- the first for the city. The energy was infectious and encouraged us to continue with the efforts! The scientific programs were impeccable!
Speaker, delegate and panelist- irrespective of the role, learning was the goal! Thank you all the office bearers of AOP Gujarat and AOP Ahmedabad for their zeal, enthusiasm and excellent organisational capabilities! Kudos! # aopgujarat

Sharing some salient points on Cancer Prevention:

A maternal diet high in its content of fruits and vegetables or supplemented with folic acid appears to reduce the risk of ALL, neuroblastoma, and tumors of the central nervous system.14,15 Breast feeding may be associated with a decreased prevalence of childhood cancers.16 There is also some correlation between both maternal obesity and high birthweight with an increased prevalence of childhood cancers.17-19 These observations require evaluation of intervention strategies to improve nutrition and health behaviors before conception and during pregnancy

Avoidance of food preservatives such as nitrates, limitation of red meat consumption while adopting a diet high in vegetables and fruits, and promoting reduction of obesity are some nutritional cancer prevention strategies advocated by the World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF)
The correlation of obesity and increased incidence of cancers in adults, such as breast cancer and colorectal cancer, plus poorer prognosis of
those cancers in obese patients, is added reason to prevent obesity
in childhood

Under the Central IAPs Action plan, the PULSE module dealing with a clinical approach towards various common symptoms seen in the Pediatric Practice was kick started this week by the Sural Pediatric Association under the able leadership of Dr Rakesh Desai Sir and other office bearers of AOPG and SPACT. I was fortunate to be a part of this initiative both as a faculty but more importantly as a student. It was an enriching experience to connect with such seniors and experts from across the field. A big shout out to SPACT and especially my friend Dr Ankit Parmar for the hospitality. Looking forward to many more such gatherings!

One of the biggest problems that we as oncologists face when it comes to caring for children with cancer is the innumerable myths that occupy the minds of adults that are responsible for the child's care! There is no bigger disappointment and failure than not being able to give a completely curable child a chance at survival- not because there is not treatment or expert; not because of logistical or financial constraints but simply because the caregivers could not or did not make an informed choice! This is the most difficult hurdle to overcome!
