An 8 year old boy, diagnosed with Cone Dystrophy presented to us today with disabling glare and a moderate visual impairment (BCVA 20/200), predominantly for distance viewing. His visual disability prevents him from reading the blackboard in school.

It was such a joy to see how happy his father was, when his son could read the 20/30 line, comfortably with a handheld monocular telescope. We also suggested other non-optical aids to help him with glare, including trial with a red tint (a concept used in submarines) to prevent excessive rod pigment bleaching in photopic conditions.

An in-depth knowledge of the retinal pathology can be very helpful in customising low vision aids for the individual patient.

A 16-year-old with pathological myopia and a best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) plateauing at 6/24 due to degenerative retinal changes is encountering difficulties in managing higher studies. They've been provided with a low vision aid (LVA) trial and a 3x bioptic telescope for distance viewing, resulting in an improved vision of 6/6p.

Low Vision Aids can have a significant impact on patients with moderate to severe visual impairment.

A patient operated bilaterally for Proliferative Diabetic Retinopathy with Tractional detachment, has a visual acuity of 3/60 in the better eye. He is unable to read anything at a distance, or see details like facial expressions.

He had a significant improvement with the Bioptic telescope(6/9 on chart) , he was able to read the boards at a distance (he is reading the facilities of the hospital here) and appreciate the finer details in most of the things at a distance.

Low vision aids have several indications, and should always be given a fair trial before telling the patient "Nothing more can be done". Something can always be done.

We are proud to announce our latest Low Visual Aid- the Ocutech Bioptic telescope VES SPORT II, now available for trial!

Bioptic telescopes are special eyeglasses designed for individuals with low vision that contain miniature telescopes. They are like miniature binoculars mounted onto eyeglasses. They can help individuals who have a visual impairment (low vision) see more clearly for a full range of visual activities– to help them see better far away, at midrange and even close-up.

Eye diseases responsive to bioptic telescopes include macular degeneration (ARMD), diabetic Retinopathy, ocular albinism, macular dytrophies, myopic degeneration, nystagmus, optic atrophy, stargardt's disease, achromatopsia and many others.

Low Vision Consultation for a young Physiotherapist who works at an old age home in Ahmedabad.

Due to a congential retinal anomaly in his right eye, which is also his only seeing eye, he is unable to see anything beyond 2-3 metres. Likewise, he is unable to read any books/newpaper due to compromised near vision as well.

Imagine his delight when he could finally read a newspaper, down to the smallest print! We wish him the best for his future, with his newly enhanced vision with Low Vision Aids.
