WHY IS VITAMIN D NECESSARY FOR OUR BODY?
ðVitamin D functions:-
âĒIt is a fat-soluble vitamin obtained from sun exposure, food, and supplements. It is not naturally present in many foods but is often used to fortify food or taken as a dietary supplement
âĒVitamin D promotes calcium absorption in the gut and maintains adequate serum calcium and phosphate concentrations which helps in normal bone mineralization and prevents hypocalcemic tetany (involuntary contraction of muscles, leading to cramps and spasms).
âĒWithout sufficient vitamin D, bones can become thin, brittle, or mis-shapen.
IN ADULTS THE DEFICIENCY LEADS TO OSTEOMALACIA AND IN CHILDREN IT IS KNOWN AS RICKETS.
ðSIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF VIT D DEFICIENCY
âĒ fatigue
âĒ muscle weakness
âĒ Depression
âĒ decreased functional status
âĒ Bone pain
âĒ frequent fractures
âĒ Impaired wound healing
âĒ muscle pain
ðCAUSES :-
âĒVitamin D deficiency is typically defined as having blood levels below 20 ng/mL, while levels from 21â29 ng/mL are considered insufficient.
âĒLow intake of vitamin D in diet
âĒIntestinal malabsorption problems such as irritational bowel syndrome
âĒPoor renal function: reduces conversion of 25(OH)D to active metabolite in kidney
âĒusing certain medications that affect vitamin D metabolism, such as statins and steroids
âĒpoor sun exposure
ðMANAGEMENT :-
âĒFood such as Fortified milk and juices, yogurt,Egg yolk, beef liver, fatty fish, cod liver oil etc.
âĒBecause sunlight is a natural source of vitamin D, your doctor may also recommend going outdoors more often.
âĒOral supplements can be taken for vitamin D deficiency. You can easily buy these over the counter but should ask a doctor for dosage recommendations
ðPHYSICAL THERAPY MANAGEMENT:-
âĒPatient will be referred to physical therapy for treatment of impairments that may be a cause of vitamin D deficiency such as decline in muscle strength, decline in physical functioning, or falls prevention.
