SECOND OPINION It was a status symbol.

I, Dr. Dhiren Goradia, M.S.,(Bom), F.C.P.S., had the rare opportunity to be trained under guidance of Dr. P.K.Sen and Dr. G.B.Parulkar at Cardio Thoracic Surgery Department, K.E.M. Hospital, Parel, Bombay- a Premier Institution at National Level. Dr. P.K.Sen was pioneer of Heart Surgery in India. He contributed many research operations in early phase of Cardiac Surgery Branch. In 1976, I joined as a Tutor, Cardio Thoracic Surgery Department at B.J.Medical College and New Civil Hospital, Ahmedabad. I was promoted as Assistant Professor and Professor & Head of the Department of Cardio Thoracic Surgery. During this period, in addition to V.S.Hospital, this was the only super speciality department in the whole of Gujarat. There were no corporate hospitals in Medical Field. Neighbouring States like Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh were also used to be benefitted at this institution. New Civil Hospital, Ahmedabad was considered one of the Asia’s largest hospital in public sector. The unique feature of this state run hospital was that it was absolutely free of charge treatment to any one, irrespective of financial, social or political status. The standards of hospital treatment and consultants in various specialities were so high that minister and bureaucracy were keen to be treated at this institute. The workload and opportunity of vast experience were enormous. See more at: http://www.heartattacksurgery.com/Pages/About-Us .zCbymWYO.dpuf

Vision
Present scenario of heart diseases universally-a bird's eye view
Cardio vascular disease accounts for approximately 12 million deaths annually and is the commonest cause of death globally.
Previously considered a disease of affluent,in past three decades, there is considerable decline in incidence of coronary heart disease in western world.
Where as it is assuming epidemic proportion in asian Indian's,whether living in India or elsewhere.

While the incidence of coronary heart disease has reduced by 50% in the west,in India,it has doubled in last 25 years.
in 1960 the prevalence rate was 2%,in 2000 it was 15%.

The decline in death rates in united states due to coronary heart disease reflects identification & reduction of risk factors as well as
improved treatments & interventions for the management of coronary heart disease, heart rate irregularities & heart failure.

Nonetheless heart diseases remain most common causes of death responsible for 35% of all deaths almost one million deaths each year.

Let us put our best efforts towards awareness, identification of potential & suffering patients to make them healthy and useful members of society.
