👧 A Young Girl from Ratlam , MP – A Lesson for All of Us…
Few weeks back, I had an online consult of a very cute little girl who had pain and swelling in her right knee for the last few months. Luckily, her father gave such a clear and detailed history that I could already suspect Oligoarticular JIA (Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis) 😮💨.
I advised them to come in person for a full evaluation — and yes, the diagnosis was clinically confirmed when I saw her.
But here comes the shocking part 👀…
When I examined her eyes, I could already see changes! Without even an eye doctor’s screen, I grossly found that she had Uveitis. Later, a proper ophthalmic check confirmed Chronic Active Anterior + Intermediate Uveitis with post synechiae (damage). 😢
Because of this, my treatment plan had to completely change. Instead of a simple approach, I started her on a very aggressive treatment early to keep her eye disease under control. Thankfully, her eyes responded well 🙏.
Her blood reports showed only mild thrombocytosis, slightly high CRP-ESR, and ANA strongly positive.

🌟 The Moral of the Story
• Around 30% of children with Oligoarticular JIA can develop Uveitis.
• The saddest part 😢 is that this eye disease is asymptomatic — the child will not complain of redness, pain, or blurred vision until it’s too late.
• If not detected early, it can cause irreversible vision loss.
👉 And here is an important fact: Positive ANA is not diagnostic, but it has prognostic value. Children with Oligo JIA and positive ANA have a much higher risk of Uveitis.

✅ Key Take-Home Message
So friends, whenever you see a young child with one or two joint pain and swelling for atleast a month or so ,
• Please get an eye screen first 👁️
• And only then think of giving medicines like Naproxen for joint relief.
Because remember — joints may heal, but once eyesight is lost, it never comes back 😢.
