Every year, 1st December is celebrated globally as “World AIDS Day” as an opportunity to raise awareness on HIV/AIDS. The communities living with, and affected by HIV, networks of people from key populations and youth leaders have been, and continue to be, essential for progress in the HIV response. To mark the pivotal impact communities have had in shaping the HIV response, as well as global health at large, the theme of World AIDS Day 2023 is ‘Let communities lead’. On this occasion, the department of Community Medicine, GMERS Sola, had organised various activities in the college and the community with active involvement of faculties and students, under the leadership of Dr. Prakash Mehta, the Dean of the institute.
1] An informative session was organised for students of first year MBBS of the medical college by the faculties of Community medicine department. Dr. Rashmi Sharma (Associate Professor) gave an introduction on the theme and significance of the World AIDS Day celebration. Dr. Roshni Dave, Dr. Azbah Pirzada, Dr. Brijesh Patel and Dr. Parita Patel took the sessions covering topics like HIV/AIDS transmission, prevention, stigma and Post exposure Prophylaxis after needle stick injury which is very relevant for the students as they would be working in the hospitals in near future. The sessions were supported by intern doctors of the department.
2] A poster competition was organised for the MBBS students in which around 150 students participated in teams of 5-8 students each. The students prepared the informative posters with innovative slogans about awareness of HIV/AIDS. The posters were displayed at the department of Community medicine common area for all the faculties, students as well as general public. The best posters were given prizes. The competition was judged by Dr. Mukesh Vora (Professor and head, Pharmacology), Dr. Rashmi Sharma (Associate Professor, Community medicine) and Dr. Brijesh Parmar (Associate Professor, Skin department)
3] A health education session was organised at Vadsar village for high school students of Gajanan High school Vadsar. Dr. Azbah Pirzada, Lady medical officer RHTC addressed the session emphasising on the routes of transmission and prevention of HIV among the young population. An interactive questionnaire session was taken by Miss Bhavika Chaudhary (PHN, RHTC). It was followed by counselling and addressing queries of the students with regard to the topic. Around 85 students of standard 9th and 10th attended the session which was actively supported by the school staff and paramedical staff of RHTC.
