What is heat stroke?

Heat stroke is a condition that can happen when a child's body gets too hot. Heat stroke is medical emergency that needs to be treated quickly. Because heat stroke can lead to death if it is not treated quickly. Heat in cramps and heat exhaustion are not as serious as heat stroke but they can lead to heat stroke if not treated quickly.

How do you recognize that your child is suffering from heat stroke?

Symptoms are:

1 Body temperature of 104°C or higher.

2 Brain symptoms: Confusion, trouble walking, seeing or hearing things (hallucinating), seizures, passing out.

3 Fast breathing, skin redness, warmth, muscle cramps vomiting, diarrhoea etc..

How to prevent?

When its too hot (like current weather in Ahmedabad)

1 Try not to be too active, take breaks when you exercise.

2 Drink enough fluids.

3 Avoid 11 AM to 5 PM time for any strenous physical activity.

4 Avoid being in hot car.

What to do?

1 Quickly take child to cool area. Remove as much of their outer clothing as possible. Meanwhile prepare to visit your pediatrician near by.

2 Wrap child in cold, wet sheet and make him/her sit in front of fan or in AC, shade. You can spray with cool water on your child, put a cold pack or cool cloth on neck, armpits and groin. Continue cooling till temp goes below 38°C.

3 Administer Fever reducing medication as prescribed by your pediatrician in appropriate dosage.

4 Encourage Fluid intake and avoid dehydration.

Babies have no language to communicate they only know one language to show that they feel discomfort and that is crying.
There are many reasons for baby's crying.
1. Persistent inconsolable crying short pitch and that rise and fall rhythmically and not with some cews likes playing, sucking the finger, suggestive of hunger cry.
2. Sudden inconsolable cry high pitch which increases in pitch continuously and suddenly fall and rise again rapidly with arching and posturing associated with tightness or tense tummy suggestive of infantile colic pain.
3.Fussy whisper in association with burst of angry way suggestive of boredom.
4. Continuous high pitch cry that is inconsolable with fever and refusal to feed and vomiting suggestive of serious CNS infection like meningitis.
5. Continuous high pitch cry with limb movement in a tightly covered baby suggestive of cry of discomfort in baby due to excessive covering and feeling of heat.
