Do’s and Don’t of Board Exam

Board examinations play a key role in college admissions and in securing a good job. It’s thus justified that students get anxious about performing well in board examinations. Preparing for board exams can be stressful as students juggle homework, competitive test preparation, extracurricular activities, and much more at the same time. To increase your chances of scoring high, and to help you avoid stress and anxiety, here are a few dos and don’ts for board exam preparation.
The Dos

1. Make Your Own Notes
To make revision easy and to increase your capacity to recall important concepts in the exam, make your own notes. It’s even more useful if you write them in your own words. Composing notes gives you more clarity of concepts and makes them easier to comprehend when you revise them later. While making notes, don’t just refer to your notebooks or textbooks. Add information and key facts from other reference material that has been suggested by your teachers. Using textbook language in examinations is a sign of rote learning. If you want to score higher, write the answers in your own words but make sure you cover all the points. This is easily achievable if you write your own notes, especially in a question and answer format.
2. Take Mock Tests
If you want to ace your examinations, the only way to do so is to practice well. Solve as many question papers and mock tests as you can. In board examinations, a few questions are repeated every year. So, taking mock tests will help you identify important topics. They also help identify any gaps in your learning. Attempt at least four to five mock tests for each subject before the exam.
3. Time Your Practice Sessions
On the day of your examination, you will not be given an extended time to complete your answers. It’s important to increase your writing speed and make sure that you finish your paper on time. You can achieve this by setting a timer while practicing mock tests. If your examination is of 3-hour duration, your goal should be to finish it in 2 hours and 45 minutes.
4. Answer Easy Questions First
On reading the question paper during the exam, answer easy sections first. Board examinations offer the flexibility of answering the sections in your preferred sequence. Take advantage of this because it will help you save time for tougher sections. However, you will have to complete all answers in a section before proceeding to the next one.
The Don’ts

1. Don’t Forget to Practice Diagrams
Usually, students just go through diagrams without practicing them. If you want to score high in your board examinations, practice diagrams well. Draw important diagrams at least two to three times without referring to the textbook. Make sure you are thorough with the labels, and that your diagram is neat.
2. Don’t Procrastinate
Try covering the entire syllabus at least a month before your exams. This will leave you with enough time for revision. Don’t procrastinate and leave things for the last moment.
3. Don’t Study for Long Hours Without a Break
As much as it is important to study hard for the examinations, don’t overwork yourself. After a point in time, the brain gets saturated with information. When this happens, your brain will tire out and you’ll forget most of the concepts or mix up the information. To avoid this, take frequent breaks during your study sessions. For every two hours of study, take a 5-minute break to unwind.
4. Don’t Forget to Carry Your Stationery and Documents on Exam Day
The board examination authorities have strict rules against sharing stationery. Additionally, they won’t let you sit for the examination if you are missing an important document (for instance, your hall ticket). So, make sure you carry everything you need. A day before the examination, prepare a list of things you will need on exam day. Then, make sure you pack everything according to the list.

Exam anxiety can wreck havoc with your health. It can hinder your study concentration and ruin your sleep. But with the right tips to bust exam stress and anxiety, your board exam preparation can become much easier.

How to cope with exam anxiety

Not only is there anxiety, but there are different levels of anxiety, and not all of them are always controlled in the same way.

The problem arises when anxiety levels are high, and it becomes maladaptive, i.e, we are unable to cope with it.

Exam stress and anxiety can not only hamper your studies but also affect your health by creating sleeping and eating problems.

Rational anxiety: A student presents rational anxiety when he does not study correctly. In these cases, it is said that the problem arises because he does not have the correct study habits and techniques.

Irrational anxiety: On the other hand, a student has irrational anxiety problems when he does study, and does it correctly, but becomes nervous during the exam, and performs worse than he/she could have.

The reasons for this trigger of irrational anxiety can be many. In some cases, it arises when the student has had some type of failure, absolute or relative, in an exam.
If this student focuses his/her attention on that one time he/she did not fare well, and not on the times he/she succeeded, he/she may suffer a conditioning process -- he/she will anticipate future exam situations, which will make him/her feel unwell.

Negative feedback anticipation: On the other hand, there may also be a situation where the student has received negative information regarding the exams of specific subjects or of certain teachers and this makes him/her anticipate a bad grade, which makes him/her feel more nervous.

Negative self perception: Another reason may be the beliefs that the student has about his/her personality throughout his life.

Anxiety usually manifests itself on three levels: physiological, motor and cognitive. The symptoms of anxiety are:

1. Symptoms that arise at the physiological level can manifest in the form of body tension. For example, digestive discomfort, insomnia, sweating, muscle aches may occur.

2. At the cognitive level, in anticipation of poor test performance, beliefs of low self-esteem or concentration problems may occur.

3. And finally, at the motor level, they can present signs such as hyperactivity, feeding problems that vary from not eating anything to excessive intake, smoking and excessive drinking, crying and avoidance and escape behaviours from the exam situation.

Keys to overcome anxiety

There are different ways to control, avoid and/or reduce these symptoms, whether it is rational or irrational anxiety.

If it is a rational anxiety, the student should schedule a study time and use appropriate study techniques. There are many manuals in which guidelines are given to learn self-control of study behaviour.

It is very important to learn to use self-control strategies to know the factors that positively or negatively influence our behaviour and to modify the bad ones.

Secondly, it is important to learn to control thoughts, that is, the technique of controlling cognitive responses, changing negative thoughts and self-verifications for more positive ones.

Finally, a great key to reduce anxiety is to be confident and relativize the consequences of a bad grade. Therefore, it will give allow you to stop for a moment to take deep breaths and relax and thus be able to continue with the exam.

Over the years, most of us have heard of top students boasting about their capacity to study long hours at a stretch or studying throughout the night with no sleep at all. But you should NEVER try to force yourself to stay awake all through the night before your exams as it is deep sleep or REM sleep that turns what you studied into long-term memory.

Here are 17 tips to stop falling asleep during studies and keep yourself awake and focused for board exam preparations:

1. Stick to a healthy diet

Food which is high on fat can make you sleepy and lethargic. To stop yourself from falling asleep during studies, eat a balanced and healthy diet rich in nutrients and fibre such as soups and salads, lentils and a lot of fruits and vegetables.

If you want to boost your sugar levels, don't eat cakes and chocolates; rather, go for fruits rich in sugar such as apples, oranges and bananas.
Lean proteins are great for energy as well try snacking on granola or some trail mix or chomp an energy bar full of nuts and seeds.
2.Sleep well

The main cause of feeling sleepy while studying is not getting enough sleep at night. Sleeping 7 to 8 hours every night is mandatory to keep in good health.

Do not oversleep or under-sleep and stick to a sleeping schedule so that your brain is prepared to start feeling sleepy at the same time each night.

3. Take power naps

It is understandable if you cannot get the requisite amount of sleep at night during board exams. But you need to make up for it in the middle of the day.

4. Drink enough water

Another reason you might be falling asleep while studying is because you are not drinking enough water. But as per a study, dehydration can literally shrink your brain!

It is easy to lose track of time and not drink enough water during board exams or competitive exams. To tackle this, keep a full bottle of cold water on your study desk at all times and keep sipping it throughout the day.

You should drink 2 litres of water a day. You can fill a 2-litre bottle and aim to finish it.

5. Get up and move around

Apart from taking power naps, another thing you can do if you are feeling sleepy while studying is getting up and moving around for a short while. You don't need to hit the gym, but just need to get your blood flowing.

You can stretch and dance around to a favourite song or just take a walk outside for 10 minutes. You can even take your book and study while walking around in your room.

6. Don't study too long at a stretch

Despite what people might say about studying for 5-6 hours at a go, it is almost impossible to do so without losing concentration.

The optimal period of studying continuously is 2 hours. Every 2-hour period can be broken down again into 25 minutes of studying followed by 5 minutes of break.
During this time, get up and stretch or do a short breathing exercise. After every 2 hours, you can take longer breaks of around 20 minutes.

7. Read aloud and write more

Reading aloud can keep you more engaged than reading in your mind which will help keep you from falling asleep while studying

9. Don't get too comfortable while studying

You can also brush your teeth while you're at it. It will leave you feeling awake and refreshed.

11. Talk to yourself

Talking to yourself may sound like crazy advice but it really works! Keep talking to yourself throughout your study sessions to keep yourself awake.

"So what am I going to study now?"

"So I am done with this bit, now I can study ____"

Affirmative sentences like the following can even boost your self confidence and make you more focussed -

"I am going to ace the test tomorrow!"

"I am so well prepared, I will get 90-up for sure!"

12. Guard your eyes

Gone are the days when we only studied from books and notebooks. This is the digital era and many students spend hours staring at their computer screen to study whether it is looking at lectures online or reading notes.

Experts recommend looking away from the computer screen every 20 minutes. Close your eyes and slightly press on your lids, open them and focus on a blank wall for some time to keep your eyes from getting fatigued and stop feeling sleepy.

13. Use chewing gum

Chewing gum is very bad for your teeth but if you absolutely have to, keep a packet with you and pop one in whenever you are feeling sleepy while studying.

There are fewer chances of you dozing off in the middle of study sessions if your mouth is working constantly.

14. Drink caffeinated beverages

Drinking coffee or other drinks with caffeine can boost your energy, but be warned that the energy spurt can be short lived. Moreover, too much caffeine is bad for you. You shouldn’t drink more than 500-600mg of caffeine in a day.

One 8-ounce cup of coffee has a little lesser than 100mg of caffeine; so even out total amount throughout the day.

Stay away from chugging energy drinks as you are bound to crash after the effects have worn off.

15. Study with others

If you aren't studying alone, there is a very small chance that you will doze off in the middle of a study session.

Studying with a group of friends can be distracting, but it can also help you prepare for your board exams better if all of you in the study group can discipline yourselves enough to not get distracted from study topics.

Your friends can quiz you on your preparation or help you understand concepts that aren't clear to you yet.

16. Put on some music

You can put on some study music as well that helps balance your brain waves and improve concentration. Sometimes, if you are feeling sleepy while studying, you can change the music to something very upbeat.

While this may not help you concentrate on your studies as opposed to relaxing study music, it is sure to wake you up from your stupor!

17. Try acupressure

A new-age way to keep yourself awake while studying for board exams is to use acupressure.
When you start feeling too sleepy, use a short break to tap on the 5 central pressure points on the human body the top of your head, the back of your hands, just below the knees, the top of the back of your neck, and the bottom of your feet.

1. Effective preparation with a meticulous study plan

The first and foremost thing a student should do is to plan how and what to study. A study plan not only ensures effective preparation but also motivates students towards achieving their target score.

Before making a study plan, students should know their productive time and target completing the most challenging or difficult topics when their brain is most active.

It will help them absorb well and retain better. Besides, they should set realistic and achievable goals.

Rather than making monthly plans, students should stick to weekly targets with a daily task list.

2. Prioritise with high-weightage chapters and important topics

With more than a month in hand, the focus should be on revising chapters with high weightage and important topics. Being well-versed with these chapters will help students to score more in boards.

If there are any doubts, they should reach out to their teachers and ensure all their doubts are clarified much in advance.

While preparing, they can categorise the chapters as difficult, moderate and easy and accordingly divide their time. More time should be given to chapters that are tough and need more revision and practice.
