In my opinion some of the PEOPLE avoid seeking help for their psychological & emotional health due to following reasons: -
1. Stigma & Faulty Perception Plus Fear of Consequences.
The fear of being judged: Many worry that peers, teachers, colleagues, seniors, office heads or even family will see them as “weak,” “unstable,” or “overreacting.”
WHEREAS THE FACT IS - TO SEEK HELP IS A SIGN OF STRENGTH, NOT WEAKNESS.
They worry that academically teachers, colleagues, seniors, office heads or administrators will see them as less capable.
They fear that personal information might be shared or appear on school/college/university/ institution/ office records. WHEREAS THE FACT IS - CONFIDENTIALITY IS ALWAYS MAINTAINED.
Some fear about their prospects that it could affect job or scholarship opportunities / promotions if mental health issues are “known.”
If they are seen at Counsellor’s office, they fear that they might be singled out & they have desire to fit in, so often prioritize social acceptance.
2. Misunderstanding or Minimizing Their Struggles
“It’s just stress”: In general people think anxiety, sadness, or burnout are normal parts of life. Due to lack of awareness, they may not recognize symptoms of depression, anxiety, or trauma as mental health issues.
Self-reliance: “I should be able to handle this myself.”
Fear of vulnerability: Sharing their real concerns can feel unsafe, especially for those with trust issues or past trauma.
Constant exhaustion, overwork and stress are often glamorized (grind culture”), making emotional distress seem normal & accepted.
3. Practical Issues and Cultural Pressures
Cost: On-campus/ in-house therapy is free BUT off-campus / or outside at clinics, therapy can be expensive.
Time constraints: Between classes, assignments, jobs, work schedule people often feel they “don’t have time” to seek help.
Lack of awareness of resources: Many simply don’t know what help is available or how to access it.
They themselves and family members have high expectations. Pressure to perform well academically or on job can make emotional struggles feel like personal failure.
Some of them may feel they “should” cope on their own.
Encouraging people to seek help for their emotional health involves changing both the environment around them and the way they view help-seeking itself.
