Ayurveda Says These Foods Do Not Go Together

1Ayurveda, the ancient Indian system of natural and holistic medicine, has evolved as part of wellness and good living. It also says what to eat and what not to. Every food has its own taste (rasa), a heating or cooling energy (virya) and post-digestive effect (vipak).

When two or three different food substances of different taste, energy and post-digestive effect are combined together overloading and inhibiting the enzyme system and resulting in production of toxins in the system. Ahara includes both food and drugs. Some of these substances will stimulate the doshas and activate them towards pathological state. Therefore they become harmful to the body tissues and systems. These are all known as Viruddha dravyas or Ahita dravyas. The same is known as incompatibility in modern medicine.

Ayurveda explains incompatible foods (virudh aahar) as two or more food ingredients when combined that are not good for your health. Foods may be incompatible because they create a negative reaction in the body leading to skin conditions, block the body’s channels, contribute to heart disease or lead to indigestion. Let’s look at the food combinations that are incompatible and should not be taken together.

1 ) Milk should not be eaten with fish as milk is a coolant and fish has a hot potency that vitiates the blood.

2 ) Chicken or fish should not be combined with milk, sesame, or sprouted grains as it may lead to digestive problems.

3 ) Salt and milk together should be avoided due to antagonistic qualities in the two.

4 ) Milk and melons (or any fruit) must not be consumed together because milk is a laxative and melon a diuretic, the combination creating a sour stomach and lots of acidity.

5 ) Banana should not be eaten with milk, yogurt or buttermilk because the combination can diminish digestion, produce toxins and lead to cold, cough, and allergies.

6 ) Avoid cold or iced drinks during or directly after a meal as the cold diminishes digestive fire (agni) causing a host of digestive problems, allergies, and colds.

7 ) Ghee and honey must not be mixed in equal quantities as they have opposite reactions in the body. Honey has a heating, drying, scraping action whereas ghee has a cooling, moisturizing quality.

8 ) Sweet and sour fruits should not be combined. Individual fruits should be eaten as is and as a different meal.

9 ) Sour fruits should not to eaten or combined with milk.

10 ) Avoid eating raw and cooked foods together. One can have the salad first and then proceed for dinner after a short gap.

11 ) Potato, tomato, eggplant, and chillies are incompatible with yogurt, milk, melon and cucumber.

12 ) Eggs should not be eaten with milk, meat, yogurt, melons, cheese, fish, and bananas.

13 ) Lemon should not be consumed with yogurt, milk, cucumbers and tomatoes.

14 ) Avoid cold or iced drinks during or directly after a meal. The cold diminishes digestive power (called agni) and causes a host of digestive problems, allergies, and colds. (The same goes for ice cream and frozen yogurt.)

15 ) It is best to avoid leftovers if you can. Food loses its vital energy after a night in the fridge and gets slimy and heavy, too. If you do eat leftovers on occasion, sauté them in ghee and black pepper. Don’t mix leftovers with fresh food either.

The above list is by no means an exhaustive one. It must also be remembered that a proper Ayurvedic diet should consider nutritional value, constitution, seasons, age and any disease condition. A goal of Ayurveda is to help you better understand what foods will support your body and which ones may create an imbalance. By understanding proper food combinations, you can make the educated choices that support your body.

Ayurvedic Hair Oil Recipe

Ingredients
1. Oil: Virgin coconut oil 14 tablespoons, sesame oil 4 tablespoons, sweet almond oil 2 tablespoons, castor oil 1 tablespoon, and neem oil 1 tablespoon.
2. Water: 10 tablespoons.
3. Dried powdered herbs: amla powder 1 tablespoon (dried amla berry seeds discarded, powdered), fenugreek leaves grinded 1 tablespoon, hibiscus 1 tablespoon (dried leaves and petals of red Hibiscus grinded), bhringaraja 1 tablespoon (dried leaves grinded), Brahmi Brahmi (Bacopa Monnieri) 1 tablespoon (dried leaves grinded), tulasi powder 1 tablespoon (dried leaves powder), henna powder 1 teaspoon (dried), and fenugreek powder 1 teaspoon.

Combine all the dried herbs in a heavy bottom pot. In a separate pot, bring water to a boil. Pour 5 tablespoons of boiling water on the dried herbs. Let herbs soak in water for about 2 hours. Pour all the oils over the soaked herbs in the pot. Stir well. Turn on heat at low so that the oil is warm to slightly hot. Continue steeping un-covered at low heat for 2 to 3 hours. Turn off heat. Let it cool.

Filter to remove all solids. Heat oil again to remove more moisture for about 30 minutes on low heat. Let the oil cool and store in non-transparent glass or plastic bottles.

How to Apply

Hair oil should be applied at night before going to sleep so it will work on your scalp and hair overnight. In the morning, you may shampoo and wash your hair. It should be applied once a week for normal hair. It may be applied twice a week for dry hair, or every two weeks for oily hair. Normally, the oil is heated to lukewarm before massage. It is not necessary. However, the oil should not be cold. It should be at least at room temperature.
Dip finger tips in oil and rub in to the scalp. Repeat the process until most of the scalp is covered. Do not pour the oil directly on either your hair or scalp.
Now use young finger tips to massage the scalp in a circular motion for about 30 minutes. This will stimulate blood circulation. Now use your fingers to oil hair in strands especially if you have split ends. Put at towel on your pillow to protect your pillow and bed sheets from oil. In the morning, wash your hair with just warm water. If you choose, you may shampoo your hair.

Herbal Hair Oil Recipe

To make a herbal hair oil using aloe vera, fenugreek and curry leaves, you will need to get the following ingredients. They are: coconut oil, aloe vera, fenugreek, and curry leaves.
Grind aloe vera pulp, fenugreek and curry leaves. Mix it with coconut oil. Bring the mixture to a boil. Set aside to cool. Put in container for week before filtering the leaves.

Hair Oil with Coconut Milk

Ingredients are coconut oil 1 cup, coconut milk 1 cup, brahmi powder 5 teaspoons, aloe vera 2 teaspoons, and tulsi leaf paste 1 teaspoon.
Grate coconut and using a mixer/grinder crush it. Then squeeze the milk. Use fresh aloe vera. Squeeze the inner crux or you can use with the skin but cut into small pieces. If you have tulsi leaves make it a paste or buy tulsi powder.
Mix brahmi powder, aloe vera and tulsi paste. Add coconut milk and mix well. Now add coconut oil and mix together. Start to heat it in low flame. Stir with a long spoon. When the fumes starts to come add few grains of rice or fenugreek or corn and see it pops up. This is the proper time to switch off the flame. Take care to not getting the contents too dark or do not allow to burn. When it cools down sieve it and pour into a suitable glass bottle or ceramic container.

You can apply this hair oil with coconut milk once in a week basis. First loosen your hair, take out all the knots with fingers moving from top to ends. Spread well all the strands. Apply the hair oil all over hair and scalp. Give a thorough massage. It is better to rub on scalp in a rounded motion. Do not scratch with finger nails. No need to apply excess oil, keep an average quantity to apply. Wait for half an hour. Then take bath. If may wash the excess oil out by washing hair with green gram flour.

Brain Development in Children – What to Eat

You are what you eat – the saying is all the more prominent in this age. EHC goes a step further and says – you will become what you eat. Growing years need proper food for overall growth and brain development. The foods consumed by children affect their learning skills and improves their ability to concentrate. Studies have found that food containing essential nutrients and vitamins has the ability to boost the brain power. EHC brings you some tasty and healthy foods that will energize your child’s brain for learning activity. You should go ahead and include these power foods in their daily intake.

Berries
Include berries such as blueberries and blackberries, which are high in vitamins and antioxidants. Berries ward off damage caused by free radicals and may improve the cognitive function of the brain, improving memory and motor skills.
Dark Leafy Greens (Spinach & Kale)
Greens, such as spinach and kale, pack an immune boosting punch with their vitamin A and C. The vitamin B-12 and folate in spinach improves brain health and the maintenance of cognitive functioning, including memory. Kale is rich in manganese, a trace mineral that helps synthesize fatty acids critical to healthy brain function. Try Kale chips, and spinach brownies to give children a nutrient boost in foods they like.

Salmon, Tuna, & Mackerel
These fatty fish are full of essential omega-3 fatty acids. Omega 3 rich fish, such as salmon, tuna, and mackerel are important for brain development, heart health and reducing inflammation. Your brain is comprised of approximately 60% fat, and by including Omega 3 fatty fish, such as salmon and tuna, at dinner you are providing the essential fats your brain requires for optimal functioning.

Eggs
Just one egg contains an amazing amount of nutrition. With 6 grams of protein per egg and more than a dozen vitamins and minerals including riboflavin, B12 and folate, they are a rich super food. Eggs are also an excellent source of choline, an important nutrient for brain development.

Whole Grains & Brown Rice
A simple switch to brown rice, whole wheat pastas and whole grain breads can increase brain health. Filled with vitamins and magnesium, important to cognitive health, whole grains contain B vitamins including folate and B12 that increase memory and regulate energy levels to keep kids alert in class. Add in fiber rich oats and quinoa to get the benefits of more fiber and added protein in your casseroles, baking and morning hot cereal.

Beans
A nutrient-rich food, beans contain protein, complex carbohydrates, fiber, antioxidants, iron and important B-Complex vitamins. Try adding beans to a wrap, soup, pasta sauce or chili. Bean dips are a great way to spice up raw veggies for an after school snack. Puree chickpeas, lentils or white kidney beans with some garlic, lemon and extra virgin olive oil for a brain healthy dip for snacks.
Chocolate
Warm up with hot chocolate to help your brain! Dark chocolate contains more antioxidants than blueberries and natural cocoa rates higher than raspberries and blackberries for these key nutrients. The antioxidants in chocolate protect brain cells from damaging free radicals and improve cognitive function.

Almonds & Walnuts
Walnuts are the top nut for brain health with their high concentration of DHA, an Omega-3 fatty acid shown to improve cognitive performance. Just a quarter cup of walnuts provides almost 100% the recommended daily intake of DHA. Almonds are high in Vitamin E, also shown to improve memory function and make a great midday snack.

Milk & Yoghurt
Protein and B vitamins present in dairy foods are essential for the growth of brain tissue, enzymes, and neurotransmitters. Milk and yoghurt are packed with protein and carbohydrate which is a source of energy or the brain. If your children refuse to drink their milk, try substituting with yoghurt at mealtimes. Nuts and berries could be added.

Oatmeal
Oatmeal is rich in fiber and protein and helps to keep the arteries of the brain and heart clear. It has been found that children who eat oatmeal were better at memory tasks and map skills. Oatmeal digests slowly and provides the children with a steady supply of energy for a long time.

Fortified Cereals
Fortified whole grain cereals are rich in folate and complex carbohydrates. The fortified cereals are a great source of protein and vitamin B 12. Vitamin B12 helps us to remember things in a better way.

Water
Water is a highly overlooked food for children. School going children drink very little water and this can affect the proper brain function. When the children get dehydrated after playing they will be irritable and lethargic and will not be in a frame of mind to listen or memorize.

Broccoli & Cauliflower
Broccoli and cauliflower also contain choline which is essential for brain development and for the effective communication of the brain with rest of the body parts. You may use raw broccoli and boiled cauliflower in salads or in various other preparations.

Pumpkin Seeds
A handful of pumpkin seeds will contain the daily required amount of zinc. Zinc enhances the memory and thinking skills. You can add roasted pumpkin seeds into salads.

Sesame Oil – The Oil for Beauty & Health

Apart from its culinary use, sesame oil has several beauty and health benefits. It has been used for thousands of years for glowing skin and hair. It prevents skin aging, wrinkles and pimples. It stops split ends, and even darkens graying hair.
Sesame oil is very popular for its use in hair growth treatments. Sesame seed oil originates from the Sesamum indicum plant. The plant’s seeds are pressed to obtain the pale yellow oil which contains fatty acids that can work to protect the skin. Sesame oil is highly nourishing, healing and lubricating. It is enriched with vitamin E, B complex and minerals such as magnesium, calcium, phosphorus and protein.
Skin Health
Sesame is full of zinc, which is an essential mineral to produce collagen. Zinc is great for healing damaged tissues in the body. Keeps skin flexible by keeping it soft and supple. Helps tighten facial skin. Pulls out toxins, which means less pimples. Apply sesame oil all over your face and massage it in thoroughly. Next, scrub your face with rice powder. Then wash it off with warm water. Afterwards, rinse your face with cold water to close the pores Sesame oil is thicker than other types of oil, which means it has a higher viscosity. This property allows it to seep down into your pores when you massage it over the skin. The oil's nutrients start to work from the inside out as well as on the surface of the skin. Sesame seed oil has inflammatory, antibacterial and anti-fungal properties which are helpful in clearing up existing pimples and preventing the development of blackheads. To use as a blemish fighter, apply sesame oil to problem areas at night before going to bed and wash it off the next morning. You can also wash your face with it, similar to using a cleansing cream. Sesame seed oil naturally attracts oil soluble toxins from your skin.
Sesame oil health
The vitamin E content and the antibacterial properties of sesame seed oil make it a good treatment for cuts and wounds. It promotes faster healing and it also reduces the appearance of scars on the skin.
Daily applications will help prevent the harmful ultraviolet rays of the sun and eliminate the risk of skin cancer and wrinkles. It also is a natural barrier to smoke and pollutants in the air.
A sesame oil massage for infants helps improves growth and sleep. Diaper rashes and dry skin are reduced. Apply it to the nose and ears for protection against common skin problems.
Rub sesame seed oil into your heels every night before going to bed, then put on cotton socks that you do not mind getting stained. Within a couple of days you should notice softer feet.
Hair Health
You may eat sesame seeds because they are packed with many nutrients which nourish the scalp and hair. This includes vitamin E, lecithin, essential fatty acids and protein. It can be used as a hair darkener. Used with other carrier oils like argan oil, coconut oil, olive oil or sweet almond oil, sesame oil is well known for its hair darkening properties.
Sesame seed oil is a wonderful way to condition dry, damaged hair that is full of split ends or is chemically treated. It will moisten and strengthen.
Sesame seeds are rich in replenishing vitamins and minerals. Massaging your scalp with sesame seed oil will help moisten a dry, flaky scalp.
Sesame seeds also have anti-fungal, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties which help clear scalp infections, dandruff, and clogged pores that all cause hair thinning and hair loss.
Massage sesame oil into the scalp using your fingertips before going to bed and leave it all night. You should cover every part of the scalp. Wash the hair in the morning. This is a highly effective treatment for dandruff. For best results, use sesame oil daily for 30 days.
Stress is among the chief culprits behind hair loss. Due to its amazing cooling properties, sesame oil helps to relive stress and thus play a vital role in combating hair loss.
It is important to note that just using oil to massage the hair is not a cure to dryness. Dryness is often caused by a lack of hydrating foods and liquids in your diet. Even though sesame oil nourishes the scalp and control dryness, you need to employ some other measures to get rid of scalp dryness and dandruff.
