Pov : Doc what actually causes acne?
PS : Mother is always right.
Acne isn't just dirty skin
It happens when 4 things combine : excess oil + clogged pores+bacteria + inflammation.
Common triggers I see in clinic
Hormonal Changes: Increased androgen levels during puberty, pregnancy, or menstrual cycles stimulate oil glands to produce more sebum, causing acne.
Clogged Pores: A mixture of dead skin cells and excessive oil (sebum) plugs hair follicles, resulting in whiteheads or blackheads.
Bacteria (C. acnes): Bacteria can multiply within blocked pores, leading to inflammation and red pimples or pus-filled cysts.
Dietary Factors: High-glycemic diets (sugary foods, refined carbohydrates) and dairy products are potential triggers that can increase inflammation and oil production.
Stress: While not a direct cause, stress can exacerbate acne by causing the body to produce more cortisol and oil-stimulating hormones.
Skincare and Makeup: Oily or heavy lotions, soaps, and cosmetics can block pores (comedogenic). The American Academy of Dermatology recommends using "non-comedogenic" or "oil-free" products.
Friction/Pressure (Acne Mechanica): Pressure from helmets, chin straps, masks, or backpacks can cause breakouts.
Medications: Certain drugs, including corticosteroids, lithium, and certain anticonvulsants, can trigger or worsen acne.
Environmental Factors: High humidity, pollution, and sweat can aggravate the skin
