Professor Hamid Ali of Petroleum Studies at the Aligarh Muslim University has been declared elected as President of AMU Teachers' Association (AMUTA). He is also the Dean, Faculty of Engineering and Technology.
Dr. Aftab Alam, Associate Professor of Political Science was elected as Honorary Secretary of AMUTA and Dr. Mohd. Irfan of Museology was elected unopposed as Joint Secretary.
The results were announced late last night by the Chief Election Officer, Professor Saleem Akhtar.
Dr. Fatima Shujatauulah, Dr. Bilal Husain and Dr. Mohd. Mohsin were elected as members of the Executive Committee of the AMUTA.

The Vice Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University, Lt. Gen (Retd.) Zameer Uddin Shah has appointed Dr. Jamshed Siddiqui, Associate Professor, Department of Computer Science as Proctor of the University in addition to his own duties
for a period of two years or till further orders, whichever is earlier, with immediate effect.
Dr. Jamshed Siddiqui holds a Master in Computer Science and obtained the degree of PhD in Information Systems from Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee.
His reaserch areas and special interests
include Information Systems, MIS Systems, Analysis and Design, Knowledge Management Systems, E- Business, Data Mining and Parallel Computing.
Dr. Siddiqui has published several papers in journals of international and national repute.

The Vice Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University has approved the establishment of another two Study Centres of the Distance Education Centre of AMU.
The Vice Chancellor, on the recommendation of the Director, Centre for Distance Education and on the basis of inspection report by the visiting team, approved the establishment of these centres at the Insan Degree College, Shiksha Nagar, Kishanganj (Bihar) and Aley Mansoor Inter College, Pushkar Nagar, Meera Sarai, Amroha (UP).
The Director of the Centre, Dr. Nafees A. Ansari said that the above approval is without any financial commitment on the part of the University. He further
clarified that the study centres have to abide by the rules and regulations of the Centre. He said that adding the new centres, the total number of the CDE centres has become 35 covering 12 states of the country. He said that about 130 requests for establishing such centres in the remaining states are pending final report of the visiting team.

Noted Malyalam novelist and former student of Aligarh Muslim University, Punnhil Kunju Abdullah has
written a novel "Aligarh Kathakal" in Malyalam language published by Mathrubhumi Books (ISBN-978-81-8265-295-8, Price Rs. 150/-). Dr. Kunju Abdullah did his MBBS from AMU and written thirteen short stories on AMU's socio-cultural life. He has been a resident member of Nasrullah Hostel in V. M. Hall during 1962-1971. He has dedicated the Short Story to Professor Mehdi Hasan of Department of Anatomy, J. N. Medical College.

Dr. Mohammad Faisal Siddiqui, working as a Young Scientist at Interdisciplinary Brain Research Centre, J.N. Medical College, Aligarh Muslim University, has been awarded the International Travel Award by the Department of Biotechnology, New Delhi to present a paper at the International Workshop on Neuroscience, "IBRO International Workshop 2012" at Szeged, Hungary. Dr. Siddiqui did M. Phil in Zoology (Genetics) and after completing Ph.D. work under the supervision of Dr. Anjum Ara and Prof. Shameem J. Rizvi, he joined Young Scientist Project as Principal Investigator, sanctioned by the Uttar Pradesh Council of Science and Technology, Lucknow to study the antimutagenic potential of herbal medicinal plant Camellia sinesis on genetic and neuronal and points. Dr. Siddiqui has attended national and international symposia, conferences, workshops and presented 20 papers. He has also published research articles in reputed national and international journals. Recently, a Germany publication has published a book with collaboration of Dr. Shadab from Forensic Medicine, JNMC. In July 2011, the Department of Science and Technology also funded him to present a paper on "Toxicology" at Italy. He is life member of National Environmental Science Academy (NESA), Indian Academy of Neurosciences (IAN) and Environmental Mutagen Society of India (EMSI).

Mr. Merajul Islam Robab, a research scholar of the Botany Department, Aligarh Muslim University has been awarded with Junior Scientist of the Year Award-2011 by the National Environmental Science Academy, New Delhi. Earlier, he was awarded Young Scientist Award by Bioved Research Society, Allahabad. He has research experience of more than four
years in the field of Plant Pathology and Nematology. Mr. Merajul Islam Robab's research articles were published in the scientific journal of international repute.

Professor Mohd. Muzammil of the Civil Engineering Department, Z. H. College of Engineering and Technology, Aligarh Muslim University attended a National Conference (HYDRO-2011) held at Sardar Vallabh National Institute of Technology (SVNIT), Surat (Gujarat) and presented a paper on 'Spreadsheet approach to reliability analysis of a pier against scour'. In his paper, he mentioned that 60% of all bridge failures result from scour and other hydraulic related causes. He pointed out that more than 350 persons have been killed in India due to failure of bridges.

The Department of Jarahat, Ajmal Khan Tibbiya College, Aligarh Muslim University is organising Second National Conference and a Live Workshop on January 21-22, 2012 on
Laparoscopic Surgery and Unani procedures like leech therapy, cupping and venesection. Prof. Anees Ismail, Chairman, Department of Jarahat and Chairman Organizing Committee said that the leech therapy, cupping and venesection are age-old effective methods of treatment for non-healing ulcers, varicose veins and various deformities needing plastic and reconstructive surgery. He said that in this workshop, laparoscopic surgery for gall bladder, appendix and ovarian cyst will be done for patients with stones in the ducts of gall bladder, which causes jaundice. Prof. Ismail said that the interested patients may register for this treatment by attending Surgery/ Jarahat OPD in A.K. Tibbiya College Hospital from 12th January to 20th of January 2012. The operations in the workshop will be done free of cost.

Dr. S. Moied Ahmed, Associate Professor, Department of Anaesthesiology and Critical Care and In-charge of ICU and Emergency Services, J.N. Medical College, has been awarded fellowship by the American College of Chest Physician (FCCP). Dr. Ahmed, one of the two Indians awarded with the fellowship, was felicitated by the Board of Regents of the American College of Chest Physician at the convocation ceremony organized during the Annual Chest Conference held in Honolulu, Hawaii, United States. Dr. Moied also presented two peer reviewed research papers at the Conference entitled "The effect of positive end expiratory pressure (PEEP) on intra-abdominal pressure (IAP) in post-surgical mechanically ventilated patients" and "Evaluation of the efficacy of simplified Fencl-Stewart approach in analyzing the acid base status following resuscitation with two different fluids". His first paper dealt with the intricacies of mechanical ventilation and a correlation between the intra-thoracic pressure and intra- abdominal pressure was established highlighting the ill effects of mechanical ventilation in patients with existing abdominal pathology. His other paper, presented by his postgraduate student, Dr. Shivani Agarwal, dealt with the simplified way of analyzing the biochemical status of a patient and also established Ringers lactate a better fluid especially when large volume of fluid has to be infused. Dr. Ahmed's research papers were greatly appreciated by the audience. The research would help to simplify the method of analysis in the daily clinical practice, decide on the type of fluid to be infused in a particular disease process and take necessary precautions to avoid complications during mechanical ventilation of a patient. The new fellows were also asked to take the pledge to dedicate oneself for the educational goals of the society, make special efforts to control to***co use and eliminate this hazard from the globe and strive for providing patient-focused care whenever and wherever possible. Dr. Moied has expressed thanks to the University administration, the JNMC Hospital administration and the departmental colleagues for allowing him to attend the conference and help him to avail the financial assistance. Prof. Shakeel Ahmad, Department of Civil Engineering, Z. H. College of Engineering and Technology, Aligarh Muslim University has been awarded with the prestigious John C. Gammon Prize at the 26th National Engineering Conference held at Bangalore by Institution of Engineers (India), Kolkata in recognition of his scholarly contribution to the Civil Engineering Journal under title "Use of Waste Human Hair as Fibre Reinforcement in Concrete". The award carried a Gold Medal and citation.

Former Pro-Chancellor of the Aligarh Muslim University, Nawab Rahmatullah Khan Shervani passed on 11 morning at J.N. Medical College Hospital. He was 83.
On account of sad demise of Nawab Rahmatullah Khan Shervani, AMU observed one day's mourning in the campus today and as a mark of respect to the departed soul, the University and its maintained institutions were closed for the day and all scheduled programmes and meetings for today were postponed.
Nawab Rahmatullah Khan was elected Pro-Chancellor of AMU in November 2006 and he was a member of the AMU court for nearly three decades. His family was closely associated with the AMU founder, Sir Syed Ahmad Khan and his father Late Nawab Muzammilullah Khan Shervani served as Vice Chancellor of AMU.

Nawab Rahmatullah Khan wrote a number of articles on Dr. Zakir Husain, Nawab Ali Yawar Jung, Prof. Rasheed Ahmad Siddiqui and others.
Nawab Ibne Saeed of Chhatari, former AMU Treasurer, Prof. Razaullah Khan, Department of Civil Engineering, Prof. Qazi Afzal Husain, Dean, Faculty of Arts and Prof. Faizan Mustafa, Vice Chancellor, National Law University, Orissa also paid rich tribute to the departed soul.

The Aligarh Muslim University has decided to facilitate transport services to the female students of Abdllah Hall, Indira Gandhi Hall and Begum Sultan Jahan Hall of Residence. The decision was taken in a consultation meeting chaired by Prof. S. Mehdi Abbas Rizvi, officiating Vice Chancellor. A committee was constituted under the convenership of DSW with Proctor, MIC (CAW) as members. The meeting was held to discuss the mode of transport services,
routes, frequency and the operation of
the busses to facilitate easy and safe transportation to the girl students of the University. It was decided at the meeting that the private bus operators will be allowed and the monthly charged of the transportation will be borne by the commuters themselves. This was also resolved that Proctor will provide at least one security guard on the Bus and no outsider or male will be allowed. The meeting also urged the desirous girl students to avail the bus facilities from their Hall or Residents to the department of studies. Another consultative meeting decided to provide ATM facility of State Bank of India in the Abdullah Hall and other places in the University campus especially near Purani Chungi University Gate. The officiating Vice Chancellor Prof. S. Mehdi Abbas Rizvi said that he has already met the Branch Manager of SBI, University Branch to provide ATM facilities in Abdullah Hall and other places. The terms and conditions shall be in line with the exciting ATM machine at the administrative block. The monthly rent from the SBI should be negotiated in favour of the University. The University space to the allocated to the SBI will be in accordance with the University rules and procedure. A six members committee has been constituted with MIC (Properties and Waqf) as its convener to take appropriate action for the installation of ATM machine in the Abdullah Hall and other places on the campus.

The election result for representation of teachers at the University Court of the Aligarh Muslim University has been declared. Prof. Mohd. Abu Sufiyan Zilli, Chief Election Officer said that Prof. Mukhtar Ahmad, Department of Electrical Engineering and Prof. Israrul Haque, Department of Business Administration were elected from the Professor category by securing 161 and 165 votes respectively while in the Reader category, Dr. Jamshed Siddiqui, Department of Computer Science, Dr. Salman Hameed, Department of Electrical Engineering and Dr. Mobin Beg, Department of Civil Engineering garnered 258, 179 and 126 votes respectively registering victory over their opponents. In the Lecturer category, Dr. Nabiullah, Department of Applied Mathematics, Dr. Badrudduja Khan, Department of Moalijat, Dr. Rashid Umar, Department of Geology, Dr. Anees Ahmad, department of Community Medicine and Dr. Ashraf Matin, Department of Petroleum Studies won the election by garnering 183, 165, 162, 130 and 113 votes respectively. Prof. Zilli further said that 24 teachers were in the fray for ten vacancies at the AMU Court from teachers category.

The Aligarh Muslim University has postponed all its examinations scheduled from December 1 to 10, 2011.
All the examinations scheduled for the said period in all the faculties have been postponed and will be rescheduled from December 14, 2011 onwards.

The election for the Aligarh Muslim University Students' Union 2012 and the student representatives in the University Court will be held on December 10, 2011. Prof. Saleem Akhtar, Chief Election Officer said that the process of the election will start from the November 26, 2011 with display of Voters' lists by the respective Deans. Filing of objections for corrections in Voters' lists on 28th November, Notification of the final Voters? lists by the respective Deans on 29th November, filing of nomination papers in the prescribed form at Aligarh Muslim University Students' Union (AMUSU) Office on 30th November, scrutiny of nomination papers on 1st December, withdrawal of nomination on 3rd December, display of the list of valid candidates at the AMUSU Office on
3rd December, allotment of serial numbers to the valid candidates and notification thereof at AMUSU Office on 5th December, circulation of the final list of candidates on 5th December, final speeches at Union Hall Terrace by the chair candidates on 8th December, polling at faculty level on 10th December and the counting of votes shall start from 6:30 pm onwards till the declaration of results on 10th December.
