🔬 On What Concept Was EECP Made?
EECP (Enhanced External Counterpulsation) is designed on the concept of counterpulsation — the same principle used in the Intra-Aortic Balloon Pump (IABP), but applied externally and non-invasively.
📌 The Core Concept – Counterpulsation
•When the heart relaxes (diastole), EECP cuffs inflate sequentially from calves to thighs.
•This pushes blood back to the heart, increasing blood supply to the coronary arteries.
•Just before the heart contracts (systole), the cuffs deflate rapidly, reducing resistance and workload on the heart.
📌 Physiological Benefits
1.Improved Coronary Perfusion → More oxygen-rich blood reaches the heart muscle.
2.Reduced Afterload → The heart pumps more efficiently with less strain.
3.Collateral Circulation → Stimulates growth of natural bypass vessels, creating new pathways for blood flow.
4.Endothelial Function → Improves nitric oxide release, reducing stiffness of blood vessels.
💡 EECP = Non-invasive, drug-free therapy based on a well-proven physiological principle of counterpulsation.
