When Dr. Santosh G. Honavar asked me to present on โ€˜๐‘บ๐’Ž๐’‚๐’๐’ ๐‘ป๐’๐’˜๐’, ๐‘ฉ๐’†๐’•๐’•๐’†๐’“ ๐‘ถ๐’‘๐’‘๐’๐’“๐’•๐’–๐’๐’Š๐’•๐’Š๐’†๐’”โ€™ at AIOS Empowerโ€”the All India Ophthalmological Society conference on practice developmentโ€”I wasnโ€™t sure what to talk about. So, asked him. He casually said, โ€œJust share your storyโ€”why you chose to practice in a small town and how you made it a success.โ€

That was a relief. Storytelling comes naturally to me.

I enjoyed making the presentation and even more while delivering it. My plan was simpleโ€”present, then catch the earliest flight back from Bangalore to Chandigarh. But guess what? This turned out to be one of the most insightful CMEs Iโ€™ve attended.

The hall was packed, and most attendees stayed throughout. The sessions covered everything except clinical topicsโ€”๐‘ถ๐’‘๐’†๐’“๐’‚๐’•๐’Š๐’๐’๐’”, ๐‘บ๐’•๐’“๐’‚๐’•๐’†๐’ˆ๐’š, ๐‘ด๐’‚๐’“๐’Œ๐’†๐’•๐’Š๐’๐’ˆ, ๐‘จ๐‘ฐ, ๐‘ญ๐’Š๐’๐’‚๐’๐’„๐’†๐’”, ๐‘บ๐’„๐’‚๐’๐’Š๐’๐’ˆ ๐‘ผ๐’‘, ๐‘ท๐’“๐’๐’„๐’†๐’”๐’”๐’†๐’”โ€”the very foundation of running a hospital successfully. And to my surprise, I enjoyed these sessions even more than presenting my own talk!

I actually felt awful for leaving early.

For someone like me, who never formally studied management, these discussions were invaluable. Hats off to the AIOS teamโ€”Dr. Honavar, Dr. Samar Basak, Dr. Namrata Sharma, Dr. Lalit Verma, Dr. Senthil, and the entire teamโ€”for curating such a brilliant session.

So, it got me thinkingโ€”should doctors learn business? Or more broadly, should any professional who is also an entrepreneur learn business?

Not everyone needs an MBA, but understanding leadership, finance, and strategy makes us better doctors, better employers, and ultimately, better at serving patients.

Drawing nearly 800 attendees this year, it became a milestone event for the Cornea Society of India (hashtag ), the worldโ€™s largest cornea organization. And there were more reasons than one that made this event truly extraordinary!!

The Local Organizing Committee (LOC), led by the visionary Dr. Himanshu Matalia, pulled off a first-of-its-kind national "silent medical conference." Picture this: a sprawling hall alive with multiple sessions happening simultaneously, each attendee choosing their preferred discussion with seamless audio-visual technology. No noise, no chaosโ€”just an immersive learning experience. Beyond the conference rooms, the LOC orchestrated incredible social events, creating a perfect balance of education and connection.

With international faculty from 8 countries, Keracon 2024 is a melting pot of global expertise. Collaborative sessions with global organizations like the ๐‚๐จ๐ซ๐ง๐ž๐š ๐’๐จ๐œ๐ข๐ž๐ญ๐ฒ ๐จ๐Ÿ ๐”๐’๐€, ๐€๐ฌ๐ข๐š๐ง ๐‚๐จ๐ซ๐ง๐ž๐š ๐’๐จ๐œ๐ข๐ž๐ญ๐ฒ, ๐„๐ฎ๐‚๐จ๐ซ๐ง๐ž๐š, ๐„๐‚๐‹๐€, Eye Bank Association Of India, and ๐ˆ๐’๐‚๐Š๐‘๐’ enriched the scientific agenda, making it a truly world-class event.

CSIโ€™s signature courses elevated the learning experience to another level. With a combination of online pre-conference classes and offsite wet labs, participants gained hands-on exposure to advanced techniques, including DMEK, DSEK, SLET, DALK, MMG, and Tattooing. It was arguably the best surgical education platform for trainees to master these specialized skill sets.
Hats off to the delegates who took time out from their busy practices to attend this 2.5-day event, demonstrating an incredible commitment to upgrading their skills and knowledge. Their enthusiasm truly underscores the passion that drives our field forward.

The core Executive team of CSI, led by President Dr. Namrata Sharma, embodies a unique driveโ€”to outsmart itself every year! This relentless pursuit of improvement ensures that every meeting surpasses the last in scale, quality, and impact.
