Discussion on various nuances of establishing Solar co-operative projects operated by farmers. It has initially experimented in a small village (Dhundi) in Anand district. It was further replicated to other villages and these Solar cooperatives with help of IWMI and NDDB made it possible to generate electricity through solar and were able to sell the surplus creating options of livelihoods to the marginal farmers.
Gujarat state government adopted this model in the scheme named Suryashakti Kisan Yojana (SKY). In the Union Budget 2020, Kisan Urja Suraksha Evam Utthan Mahaabhiyan (KUSUM) scheme has been announced which is inspired by these experiments on solar cooperatives in Gujarat with a budget an outlay of 34,422 Crore.
A team led by Prof. Dr. Tushar Shah from IWMI played key role in designing model – Solar Lift Irrigation of the project and implemented it to success.
We are happy to host Prof. Dr. Tushar Shah along with his team. For a discussion on the theme "Solar Energy Policy: A Journey from DHUNDI to KUSUM".

Shifting the Powerplay
The farmers in Mujkuva Village of Gujarat are challenging the status quo of power industry by reversing their roles from that of power consumers to power generators. The solar co-operative of Mujkuva generates electricity through solar panels and sells the surplus to DISCOM thus growing solar as remunerative crop.

A field visit to explore the workings of Mujkuva solar cooperative in central gujarat.

Vaad Vivaad- The Great IRMAn Debate

The third season of the Vaad Vivaad- the Great IRMAn Debate was conducted on September 9, 2019. The event was open to all students of PRM 39 and PRM 40, and was the first official event for the batch of 40. Altogether 34 registrations were received for the debate. Debate was structured differently this time. In the first round, each participant was given 3 minutes each to put forward his/her ideas and then 1 minute each for Q and A. For the second round, 6 out of the 11 were selected based on the scoring by the jury members. The second round was more like a “heated discussion”, with these 6 finalists divided into couples of 2 on random, and given impromptu topic to speak on in intervals of 1+1+1, i.e., one-minute opening by each, next minute cross questioning and last minute for conclusion. In totality, 6 minutes per couple. Each participant was being judged individually on certain set parameters. Our esteemed jury members included Prof. PKV Kishan, Prof. Anand Venkatesh, Prof. Sushant Kumar and Prof. Abhinav Rajverma. The debate was won by Ms. Akshata Kar from PRM 39, followed by the runner up Debasish Mahalik from PRM 39.
