*Pediatric Department of GMC Anantnag removes a huge 8 cm balloon from the wind pipe of an 8 year old girl: Patient brought back to life after a prolonged and complete cardio pulmonary arrest*

Anantnag, 2 August 2025

Fulfilling its commitment towards excellent emergency patient care, Doctors and support staff from Pediatric Department of GMC Anantnag successfully resuscitated an 8 year old girl and removed an 8 cm long balloon from her wind pipe. The Life of the girl child was saved after timely and coordinated efforts of doctors and staff of Pediatrics department

The 8 year old girl child, from outside J & K, accidentally aspirated a large balloon while playing with other kids. She stopped breathing and fell on the ground unconscious. Her parents rushed her to the Pediatric Department of GMC Anantnag. It took them 20 to 30 min to reach the facility. As per parents during the whole travel there were no breathing efforts, body movements or a perceptible heart beat

The patient was received in the Pediatric HDU (High dependency unit) in complete cardiopulmonary arrest with no signs of life. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation was started without a delay and within five minutes of CPR patients heart beat returned to normal, with no perfusion or saturation abnormalities. After the successful resuscitation the patient was shifted to the SICU ( Surgical Intensive care unit) for invasive ventilatory support wherein the patient is presently hemodynamically stable and has passed urine as well.

During the intubation it was discovered that a foreign body is obstructing the airway of the child. After drifting the foreign body with the edge of the ET tube from the windpipe towards the food pipe area , the patient was intubated and Cardio pulmonary resuscitation continued till patients' heart started beating normally. Afterwards the foreign body was retrieved from the food pipe area.

Parents are requested to supervise their children while playing. They are also advised to bring their children immediately to the nearest health care facility even if there are no signs of life after an untoward event.

Prof Dr Rukhsana Najeeb, Principal GMC Anantnag congratulated the department of paediatrics for the yeoman's job. The Department of Pediatrics thanked the worthy principal for being the pioneer in starting intensive care services at GMC Anantnag.

SICU of GMC Anantnag saves another precious life; A 17 year old Girl discharged successfully after coordinated efforts of Pediatrics and Anesthesia departments.

Anantnag, 22 July 2025

On Thursday, a 17 -year-old female was brought to the Pediatrics Emergency in an unconscious state with shallow and irregular breathing and severe bradycardia. The initial resuscitation was carried out by the team of doctors of the department of Pediatrics under the supervision of senior consultants (Dr. Malik Shakir Hussain and Dr Bilal Ahmad Najar).

As the GCS of the patient was very low, the Anesthesia and Critical Care team was alerted for advanced airway management and intensive support. In the meantime a guarded gastric lavage of the patient was performed in the pediatric emergency after it was suspected on clinical examination that the patient has consumed organophosphorus poison, though the history for the same was not available.

The patient was promptly intubated and shifted to the Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU). In the SICU, the patient was put on ventilatory support and an appropriate antidote was administered based on clinical suspicion and poisoning protocol.

The patient was maintained on ventilatory support for 24 hours in the SICU, under round-the-clock monitoring and supervision. On the following day, she showed marked clinical improvement and was successfully extubated, and remained hemodynamically stable. She was shifted back to the department of pediatrics for further management. Today the patient was discharged from the Pediatric ward, after 6 days of hospital stay , in a sound and healthy state

Previously, such critical patients had to be referred to tertiary care centers like SKIMS or SMHS Hospital for ventilator support.
However, with the establishment of a fully functional Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU) at GMC Anantnag in the recent past, these lifesaving interventions are now available locally—ensuring immediate care, reduced transfer delays, and improved outcomes.

Apart from the faculty members and staff of the department of pediatrics, this case was managed successfully with the dedicated efforts of Dr. Anjum Shamin – Head of Department of Anesthesiology, Dr. Malik Zaffar – Associate Professor, Mr. Firdous Ahmad – In-charge SICU and the entire technical and nursing team of the Department of Anesthesia and Critical Care, GMC Anantnag.

Prof. Dr. Rukhsana Najeeb, Principal GMC Anantnag congratulated both the departments ( Pediatrics and Anesthesiology) and dedicated SICU team for dedication and excellent timely and coordinated efforts.
