SICU of GMC Anantnag saves another precious life; A 17 year old Girl discharged successfully after coordinated efforts of Pediatrics and Anesthesia departments.
Anantnag, 22 July 2025
On Thursday, a 17 -year-old female was brought to the Pediatrics Emergency in an unconscious state with shallow and irregular breathing and severe bradycardia. The initial resuscitation was carried out by the team of doctors of the department of Pediatrics under the supervision of senior consultants (Dr. Malik Shakir Hussain and Dr Bilal Ahmad Najar).
As the GCS of the patient was very low, the Anesthesia and Critical Care team was alerted for advanced airway management and intensive support. In the meantime a guarded gastric lavage of the patient was performed in the pediatric emergency after it was suspected on clinical examination that the patient has consumed organophosphorus poison, though the history for the same was not available.
The patient was promptly intubated and shifted to the Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU). In the SICU, the patient was put on ventilatory support and an appropriate antidote was administered based on clinical suspicion and poisoning protocol.
The patient was maintained on ventilatory support for 24 hours in the SICU, under round-the-clock monitoring and supervision. On the following day, she showed marked clinical improvement and was successfully extubated, and remained hemodynamically stable. She was shifted back to the department of pediatrics for further management. Today the patient was discharged from the Pediatric ward, after 6 days of hospital stay , in a sound and healthy state
Previously, such critical patients had to be referred to tertiary care centers like SKIMS or SMHS Hospital for ventilator support.
However, with the establishment of a fully functional Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU) at GMC Anantnag in the recent past, these lifesaving interventions are now available locally—ensuring immediate care, reduced transfer delays, and improved outcomes.
Apart from the faculty members and staff of the department of pediatrics, this case was managed successfully with the dedicated efforts of Dr. Anjum Shamin – Head of Department of Anesthesiology, Dr. Malik Zaffar – Associate Professor, Mr. Firdous Ahmad – In-charge SICU and the entire technical and nursing team of the Department of Anesthesia and Critical Care, GMC Anantnag.
Prof. Dr. Rukhsana Najeeb, Principal GMC Anantnag congratulated both the departments ( Pediatrics and Anesthesiology) and dedicated SICU team for dedication and excellent timely and coordinated efforts.
