Acute glomerulonephritis is a nephrological disorder.
It has various symptoms, the more notable ones including, red or cola-colored urine, seizures, fluid retention and pediatric hypertension.

Other illnesses such as throat infections, Hepatitis, etc. are the root cause of the disease.

Mostly, urine will be checked under a microscope for the test.

This might also include a kidney biopsy.

Intake of salty foods will be stopped. Water intake will also be restricted. It may also be required to report pediatric nephrologists of intake of fluid, food, etc. of any kind.
Oral and injectable medications will be provided.
In severe cases, dialysis and other life-support medications may also be required.

Nephrotic syndrome is a very common nephrological disease.

Irregular amounts of protein causes this condition.

Its most common symptom is swelling [over eyes, feet, ankle, etc.] and excessive changes in weight.

Lab tests and imaging is the most preferred way of diagnosis for this disease.
A few tests [amount of protein in blood, urine/ unhealthy levels of fat/cholesterol, etc.] will be done.

Kidney biopsy may also be required in certain cases [Such cases are very rare],

Usually, the treatment for the disease includes Prednisolone [ a steroid] given by a doctor.
However, one should not take the medication without medical consultation, as Prednisolone can cause side-effects if taken without medical advice.

But, if taken by the advice of a medical professional, it has minimal effects.

The effects include obesity and increased appetite. They are temporary.

Secondary/supportive medications may also be prescribed if needed.

If you notice these symptoms in your child, instantly consult a pediatric nephrologist.

Pediatric kidney biopsy [also called renal biopsy] is a diagnosis test performed to look at a child’s kidney to identify disease.

For this, the physician takes out a very minimal part of kidney tissue out of the child’s kidney.

It is usually performed through inserting a biopsy needle through the backside of the child’s rib cage. Let us understand in depth about this process.

To help him/her guide the needle, the physician will use ultrasound.

The child will generally be administered mild anesthesia so that the child stays asleep.

Also, the process will involve no cuts and stitches generally as only a simple needle is used for kidney biopsy. The kidney contains hundreds of thousands of little filters. Around twenty to thirty samples will be taken by the doctor for this test.

But, a question may arise- Why and When is Kidney Biopsy necessary?

Kidney biopsy is necessary as it can give the physician cues on the structure of the kidney filter and helps him/her identify the exact process in the kidneys.

Kidney biopsies will only be advised if ultrasound imaging and blood samples are presenting with inadequate data to make any conclusions.

Before the test, a scan will be done to ensure normality of place of kidneys. A blood test will also be undertaken to identify any present blood clots.

As the biopsy is undertaken during administration of mild anesthesia, the child will have to stop oral consumption on the day of the test after waking up.

After a detailed explanation of the process, the child is made to lie down on the bed on his tummy (with his/her back facing up). a small pillow will be kept under his/her tummy. Anesthesia will be administered to make him/her sleep. The point of biopsy will be decided by sonography. It will be cleaned thoroughly. Biopsy gun will be inserted with sonography guidance and a small piece will be taken out. Small dressing will be applied at the site.

Complications are very rare.
They include the possibility of some bleeding afterwards and pain.
This is because there are thousands of little blood vessels inside the kidney and the test can cause some bruising inside the kidney. This should settle very quickly.
After the biopsy, the child will need some time for recovery and would probably stay in the hospital for precautions. The child will have a small plaster on his back and this can be removed after a couple of hours.
To reduce the chance of bleeding or bruising inside the kidney, the child should lie on a bed for 5 to 6 hours after the test. He can eat and drink normally afterwards. If they are sore they can have paracetamol or another painkiller. After a few hours, if everyone is happy then the child can go home.
The child might feel sore for a couple of days afterwards and giving paracetamol regularly can help with this.
He can go back to school after a couple of days but should avoid playing sports for a week afterwards.
Call the doctor if:
-The child has pain in his loin or between his ribs and hip that’s getting worse
- The child’s urine becomes red, or coke-colored
- He has a fever
If your child has any symptoms of kidney disease, please refer him to a pediatric nephrologist.
