SINUSITIS AND HOMOEOPATHY
Sinusitis is an infection of sinuses, caused due to any allergy or bacteria, fungus or virus infestation. Sinuses are the moist air spaces within the bones of the face around the nose. The frontal sinuses are located in the area near the eyebrows; the maxillary sinuses are located inside the cheekbones; the ethmoid sinuses are between the eyes; and the sphenoid sinuses are present behind the ethmoid sinuses. When we're healthy, our sinuses are filled with air, making our facial bones less dense and much lighter in weight. Sinuses also play a role in how our voices sound. It is generally seen that if someone has a cold the sinuses get inflame.
When the nasal congestion (stuffiness) associated with the common cold or allergies doesn't allow the sinuses to drain properly, bacteria get trapped and lead to secondary infection in sinuses.
An acute attack of sinusitis last for 4 weeks, the symptoms might be confused with upper respiratory tract infection and the cause may be either bacterial or viral infection .If the symptoms continue longer till 10-12 wks then it is termed as sub- acute and longer than this is termed as chronic sinusitis. Chronic sinusitis, by definition, lasts longer than three months and can be caused by many causes like prolonged rhinitis, nasal polyps, and deviated nasal septum. Symptoms of chronic sinusitis may include nasal congestion, facial pain, headache, night-time coughing, an increase in previously minor or controlled asthma symptoms, general malaise, thick green or yellow discharge, feeling of facial 'fullness' or 'tightness' that may worsen when bending over, dizziness, aching teeth, and foul smell from mouth. Each of these symptoms has multiple other possible causes, which should be considered and investigated as well. Unless complications occur, fever is not a feature of sinusitis. Often chronic sinusitis can lead to reduced sense of smell .In a small number of cases, acute or chronic maxillary sinusitis is associated with a dental infection. Vertigo, lightheadedness, and blurred vision may be associated symptoms but are not typical in chronic sinusitis and other causes should be investigated.
During sinusitis due to nasal blockage the best position to avoid breathlessness is lying head up with at least two pillows under the neck .The patients are advised to inhale steam and gargle at least once a day. Intake of water should be increased and balanced diet with good amount of roughage and fruits is advised. The patients should avoid sour and fried food.
Some specific Homoeopathic medicines work wonderfully in curing the disease (but Homoeopathic principle doesn’t allow prescribing medicine on single symptom of disease, rather the case has to be treated as a whole.)
• Calcarea Sulphurica: Headache with thick, yellowish, pus like secretion, one sided discharge from nose, edges of nostrils sore.
• Hydrastis: Thick, yellowish, tenacious expectoration.
• Mercurius Solubilis: Nasal discharge is very offensive, cannot lie on right side, and cough with yellow mucopurulent expectoration, worse night and warmth of bed, catarrh with chilliness.
• Sticta: Dry, hacking cough during night, pulsation from right side of sternum down to abdomen, worse towards evening and when tired, throat raw.
• Hepar Sulph:Nasal congestion, choking cough, dry hoarse cough worse whenever any part of the body gets cold or uncovered. Some other medicines like Arsenic alb, Kali Bichromicum, Lemna Minor, Silicea etc
NOTE – THE ABOVE SAID REMEDIES ARE ONLY SUGGESTIVE AND SHOULD NOT BE TAKEN WITHOUT CONSULTING A HOMOEOPATHIC PHYSICIAN.
