What are the Common Gynecological Symptoms for Which You must Consult a Gynecologist?

Vaginal Bleeding and discharge commonly happen with every woman during menstruation. However, if you notice anything different, you must not let that go ignored and must consult your gynecologist. Mild symptoms can be treated but severe cases, and cases, which are ignored for a long time, may lead to infertility. Some va**nal symptoms may indicate s*xually transmitted diseases or may be even cervical cancers. You must consult your doctor if you have the following symptoms.

• If you are getting your periods too early or too late.
• Abnormal va**nal bleeding during periods or in between periods
• Pain in the pelvic area and it must not be related to menstrual cramps.
• Breast pain and Breast Lumps in Women.
• Burning sensation during passing urine.
• Vaginal bleeding while having s*x or after having s*x.
• Painful s*xual in*******se.
• Itching, swelling or redness in va**nal area.
• Any abnormal lump or mass in the ge***al area.
• Increased va**nal discharge.
• Vaginal discharge with unpleasant odor or of unusual color like green, yellow, or brown

How to take care of your heart health ?

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the world’s leading killer, causing 1 in every 3 deaths. In the Philippines, cardiovascular diseases are also the number one cause of death, with an estimated 50,000 dying every year. The cause of heart attacks and strokes are usually the presence of a combination of risk factors, such as to***co use, unhealthy diet and obesity, physical inactivity and use of alcohol, hypertension, diabetes and high level of cholesterol.

It is never too late to start changing your lifestyle towards a healthier heart. Here are a few practical steps you can follow.

1. Eat a heart healthy diet
A heart healthy diet consists of a combination of different foods including fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, and nuts. Cut down on salty meats such as ham, bacon, tocino, sausage, hotdog, as well as salty food such as dried fish. Use calamansi juice and vinegar to season your food instead of high-sodium condiments such as soy sauce, fish sauce, bagoong, and ketchup. Avoid the consumption of processed, canned, and fast food. Replace sweetened snacks such as doughnuts, cookies, and the like with fresh fruit and vegetables and if thirsty, substitute sweetened beverage sodas and sweetened juices with water.

2. If overweight, lose weight
Overweight and obesity is defined as a body mass index (BMI) of 25 and above. Central obesity or adiposity on the other hand is a high waist circumference of more than 80 cm for females and more than 90 cm for males. A high waist circumference points to more intra-abdominal fat and is associated with a higher risk for developing cardiovascular disease. Try to reduce 500 kilocalories in your daily diet, which will help bring about an average weight loss of approximately half to almost 1 kilogram a week.

3. Increase regular physical activity to at least 2.5 hours per week
Physical activity contributes to improved blood pressure, improved levels of cholesterol and other blood lipids, and weight control. Some physical activity is better than none. Inactive people can start with small amounts of physical activity (even as a part of their normal daily activities) and gradually increase duration, frequency and intensity. Adults are recommended to perform at least 150 minutes of moderate physical activity (e.g. brisk walking, climbing stairs, dancing, gardening or doing household chores which can result in mild increase of heart rate) spread throughout the week.

4. Don’t use to***co
To***co use and exposure to second-hand smoke are harmful to your heart. Quitting to***co use is the biggest gift of health you can give your heart and has immediate and long-term health benefits, including living up to 10 years longer. After a year of quitting, the risk of heart disease is about half that of a smoker. Fifteen years after quitting, the risk of heart disease is the same as that of a non-smoker.

5. Avoid use of alcohol
Alcohol consumption has been linked to more than 200 disease and injury conditions, including cardiovascular diseases. While most Filipinos report their alcohol drinking as occasionally, binge drinking is common in the country. There is no safe level for drinking alcohol, so it is better to avoid drinking alcohol altogether to protect your heart.

6. Have your blood pressure and blood sugar checked regularly
An important way to maintain a healthy heart is for your blood pressure and blood sugar to be checked regularly by a health worker. Some people do not exhibit symptoms even if they already have high blood pressure – and it can hurt your heart. It is also important to talk to your health worker if you have behavioural risks (unhealthy diet, physical inactivity, use of to***co and alcohol) so they can help you plan the lifestyle modifications you should take to get your heart health back on track. If you are diagnosed with hypertension or diabetes, set targets with your health worker and take your medicines regularly. Involve your loved ones in your journey to a healthier heart.

Moisturizers and lubricants often help.
For va**nal dryness by itself, I recommend trying over-the-counter moisturizers and lubricants.

Vaginal moisturizers add moisture around and inside the va**na. There are two types. Internal moisturizers are inserted into the va**na, where they help build up va**nal tissue. External moisturizers are made for the v***a.

Lubricants decrease discomfort during in*******se. Sexually active women should use lubricants in addition to a va**nal moisturizer. I prefer water-based lubricants, though they don’t last as long as silicone-based products. Skip oil-based lubricants. They can cause irritation and make condoms less effective.

See your ob-gyn if irritation and pain during s*x don’t improve after 2 months of use, or if you have other symptoms.

Hormonal treatments also may be an option.
I often talk with patients about hormonal treatments when va**nal dryness comes along with urinary symptoms or menopausal symptoms, such as hot flashes.

Estrogen creams and tablets are inserted a few times a week into the va**na. Creams must be measured and can get messy. Tablets are a good alternative.

Vaginal rings are placed in the va**na by the patient. They release a low dose of estrogen over 90 days.

The cause is often low hormone levels related to menopause.
After and around the time of menopause, your body makes less estrogen. Estrogen is a hormone that helps maintain the va**na’s lubrication, elasticity, and thickness. Low levels of estrogen can cause thinning, drying, and inflammation of va**nal walls. This is called va**nal atrophy.

But there are other causes too.
Low estrogen and va**nal dryness can happen at other times. Estrogen levels can fall after childbirth, with breastfeeding, during cancer treatment, or with anti-estrogen drugs.

Then there are non-hormonal factors. Cold and allergy medications and some antidepressants can dry out va**nal tissue. Sjögren syndrome, an autoimmune condition that can cause a dry mouth and eyes, also can cause va**nal dryness.

There may be symptoms besides va**nal irritation or painful s*x.
Dryness isn’t always just inside the va**nal canal. Less estrogen means less natural va**nal moisture. This can dry and irritate the v***a, the external female ge***al area. Women with v***ar dryness often notice irritation when they’re putting on their underwear.

Some women also have increased urinary frequency or repeated urinary tract infections (UTIs) along with va**nal dryness. When this group of symptoms happens during menopause, ob-gyns call it genitourinary syndrome of menopause.

Can you get pregnant on your period?

You sure can! Although the risk of pregnancy is lower during your period, it is still a good idea to use some form of birth control to avoid unintentional pregnancies.

What to do if your period comes late ?

First, do not panic! It is common for periods to not always come 28 days apart on the dot. A typical menstrual cycle falls between 21-34 days, but there are quite a few factors that can affect the regularity of periods including weight gain or loss, stress, diet, medication, excessive exercise, and other lifestyle factors.

If your period does not come within 35 days and you are s*xually active, you should take a pregnancy test even if you are on birth control. If a pregnancy test comes back negative or you are not s*xually active, you should check in with your doctor who may want to conduct tests to determine the cause of this irregularity.

Should I use pads, tampons, or a menstrual cup?

There is no right or wrong answer here because all three methods allow women to go about their daily lives by collecting the blood that the body releases during a period. It is, however, important to know the basics of each option to make the best decision for you.

Pads are worn outside of the body so they collect the blood after it exits the body. Most pads are disposable after one use while others are made of cloth and meant to be washed after use. The material is highly absorbent to avoid leakage. Many women start off using pads when they first start their periods because they don’t require insertion into the va**na and are easy to use.

Tampons act almost like a plug that’s inserted into the va**na where it absorbs the menstrual blood before it leaves the body. Tampons generally come with an applicator that makes for easy and quick insertion and have a string that makes for easy removal. They are also highly absorbent and disposable after one use (up to 8 hours). Many women prefer tampons because they are small and discreet, they are usually not felt once they’ve been properly inserted into the body, and they allow women to engage in a greater range of activities than pads do, including swimming and other active sports. It is very important to change tampons every 4-8 hours (overnight is also ok) to avoid bacteria buildup which can result in a very rare condition called Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS). This rare but serious condition can result from wearing a tampon for longer than 8 hours.

Menstrual cups look like little inverted bells and similarly to tampons, they are worn inside the va**na. Rather than absorbing the blood like both pads and tampons, menstrual cups are made of medical-grade flexible silicone and collect the blood while inside the va**na. They are then emptied, washed, and reinserted into the va**na. Menstrual cups are more environmentally-friendly as they are not thrown out after a single use, which is why many women prefer this method. Women also like menstrual cups because they can be worn for up to 12 hours at a time without the risk of developing Toxic Shock Syndrome.

What side effects come along with a period?

Side effects may start up to two weeks before the start of a menstrual cycle. Women may notice a change in the body with symptoms called Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS). These can include:

Back pain
Fatigue
Acne and breakouts
Headaches
Abdominal cramps
Bloating
Mood swings
Insomnia
Swollen or tender breasts
As these symptoms recur each month around the same time, they usually start to become predictable and more manageable. When symptoms start to become overwhelming, there are steps you can take to ease them:

Limit intake of fat, salt, sugar, caffeine, and alcohol. An adjustment in diet can help to ease the side effects of PMS.
Exercise regularly.
Over the counter medications like acetaminophen and ibuprofen can effectively lessen symptoms.
Consider hormonal birth control like the pill.
If you find that any of these premenstrual symptoms are overwhelming to the point that they are impacting your daily life, you should talk to your OBGYN. He or she may be able to find ways to ease the intensity and frequency of your symptoms.

A period, also known as menstruation or a menstrual cycle, occurs when the lining of a female’s uterus breaks down and leaves the body, usually every month. The lining is made up of blood, tissue, and nutrients – the development of which is the body’s preparation for pregnancy. If pregnancy does not occur, meaning the woman’s egg is not fertilized by a s***m, hormones tell the body to shed the lining that’s been built over the last 28 days (on average), resulting in a period that varies in length from one woman to the next.

When do periods begin and end?
Periods start during puberty, which is when a girl’s body begins to change, typically between the ages of 8 and 15 years old. It’s important to remember that periods look different for everyone so the side effects, ages at which it starts and ends, and how long each menstrual cycle lasts vary from person to person. However, as a rule of thumb, if a girl’s period has not started by the age of 16, she should be evaluated by a physician to assess the cause of the delay.

Periods end when women enter menopause which generally falls between the ages of 45 and 55 years old.

Having a high BMI can harm fertility by inhibiting regular ovulation. Even in women who regularly ovulate, the higher the BMI, the longer it may take to become pregnant.
Some research also suggests that a higher BMI is associated with an increased risk of unsuccessful in vitro fertilization (IVF).
