Prediabetes isn’t killing who you think it is

A new JAMA Network Open analysis delivers a surprising twist:
Prediabetes was significantly associated with higher mortality only in younger adults (ages 20–54) (after correcting for a number of factors, including lifestyle).

Yes—older adults are more likely to progress to type 2 diabetes…
…but it’s the younger group whose lives are at stake.

If that’s true, our priorities need to shift:
• Find them faster – better screening outside of traditional healthcare settings
• Engage them differently – digital-first programs, peer networks, and age-specific approaches
• Act urgently – these are working-age, often “healthy-seeming” people

More studies are needed, but this could be the wake-up call to stop treating prediabetes as an “older person’s” problem.
