This month, we’ll be exploring how stress and burnout can show up for people in specific industries.

For founders, the stress of building, experimenting, selling, fundraising, leading, hiring, firing, and managing many stakeholders under the constant pressure of surviving, growing, and scaling can be relentless. You may be working around the clock, wearing all of the hats, making personal sacrifices, and bravely facing risks from countless variables to bring your dream to life. But, while you’re living in this glorious state of chaos and uncertainty that you signed up for, you are expected to appear calm, cool, and collected for your team and if you raised capital, for your investors.

Burnout is now classified as a workplace syndrome according to the International Classification of Diseases of the World Health Organization. With all the mixed feelings brought about by workplace stress, how can you really tell if you’re burned out?
Symptoms typically include feeling:

-Energy depletion or overwhelming exhaustion
-Negativism, cynicism or detachment from your your job
-Reduced sense of professional efficacy and accomplishment at work

How can the physical symptoms show up for you? According to the Mayo Clinic, this can look like:
- Feeling physically exhausted
- Using food, drugs or alcohol to feel better or to simply not feel (aka numbing yourself)
- Change in or trouble sleeping
- Having unexplained headaches, stomach or bowel pains and problems
- Other physical complaints that have come up recently
