round table interview with CIR Secretary-Treasurer Dr. Mahima Iyengar!

As unionization continues to grow among workers and especially housetaff, more and more people see it as a powerful way to not only improve working conditions, but to get organized to fight against harmful policies. And in this is growing authoritarianism and repression that we are seeing, collective power is more important than ever.

This week, CIR members at welcomed former U.S. Sec. of the Interior and New Mexico gubernatorial candidate to our general meeting!

We’re glad to have been able to have important discussions and greatly appreciated Haaland’s thoughtfulness in her responses and for making it clear that recruiting and retaining residents by fighting for better pay, improving current infrastructure and holding UNM accountable is a priority.

Immigrant doctors, like Dr. Alawieh, play an important role in our healthcare systems. But the U.S. government unjustly deported our friend and colleague, Dr. Rasha Alawieh, leaving hundreds of patients in New England without their kidney care specialist.
Doctors, no matter where they’re from, are an integral part of our communities -- and an injury to one is an injury to all.

This week, hundreds of members, including CIR Regional Vice President Dr. Frances Gill, travelled to ICE’s detention center in Basile, Louisiana to demand the release of detainees!

As government suppression grows and vulnerable communities continued to be targeted, we must recognize the existential threat that our nation is facing. Surveillance, militarized forces against civilians, crackdowns on freedoms and due process, and increased use of incarceration are all hallmarks of fascism.

We must and we will stand together against these attacks on our communities. If one of us is in danger, we all are. As doctors and as union workers, we will do everything in our power to fight back against the growing authoritarian forces that are harming people’s well-being.

We did it! 📣 Just in time for the start of the academic year yesterday, signed our bill to waive the 60-day coverage waiting period at . New doctors will now get health coverage on DAY 1 of employment—starting with the hundreds of doctors that started at Rutgers yesterday!

No more rationing meds, cutting hospital stays short, or forgoing care we need at the start of a residency or fellowship year. And CIR members made it happen through our determination and unity! We sent emails to elected officials, delivered testimony in Trenton, and organized hard to finally push this through.

This is a huge win, not only for us but also for our patients— because we are better doctors and we can take care of ourselves.
