Last week CIR members at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center delivered a petition to management signed by 400+ housestaff. We demanded they reconsider rejecting our priority contract proposals because we know that investing in us will only strengthen BIDMC's mission to care for all patients with dignity and respect - and we won't stop fighting until that commitment is real 💪✊

CEO Dr. Lubarsky, famous lover of collaboration across systems, refuses to even meet with union resident physicians about WMC’s completely ridiculous, highly inconvenient, and needlessly stressful employee tracking system. Yesterday, we spoke out to demand a meeting and a solution to this nightmare—and most of all an end to the disrespect for the doctors at the center of care for our communities! Thanks to .tubiolo for your support!

Everyone! Please wish a special happy May Day to CEO Dr. David Lubarsky and tell him we’re SO EXCITED to co-create solutions with him when he finally meets with union physicians about our burdensome, absurd, clock-in system! Until then, we’re excited to keep reading his thoughts on how awesome AI is 🔥🔥🔥🫡🫡🫡🫡

Last Thursday, CIR joined other unions to host a a Healthcare Worker Legislative Budget Forum to urge New Jersey lawmakers to prioritize the health of our communities in the next budget.

Thank you Senator Ruiz, Assemblywoman Morales, Assemblyman Onyema, and Commissioners Richardson and Luciano for joining us and for your commitment to the health and welfare of your constituents. Thank you to our union partners: HPAE, URA-AFT, CWA 1031, AAUP-BHSNJ, AAUP-AFT, and more.

We spoke about the importance of increasing Graduate Medical Education (GME) funding to recruit and support young doctors in New Jersey— “We are committed to New Jersey, but if we want to stay here and live here, we need to see a future here. Continued and expanded GME funding is not just support for training programs - it is an investment in patient care, health equity, and the future sustainability of our healthcare systems. New Jersey cannot afford to lose physicians, and we cannot afford to wait.”

Today, nurses, residents, staff, and community members said: Enough is enough. Save Our Hospital.

We cannot accept a future where the state’s busiest emergency department is at risk of shutting down.

We cannot accept leaders saying there isn’t enough funding to save a public hospital, when just months ago, homeland security received millions to terrorize our communities.

As doctors, we took an oath to our patients—not ICE.

In the LA Times, CIR members Dr. Alana Slavin, Dr. Marina Martinez, and Dr. Sascha Bercovitch call on medicine and our healthcare institutions to stand up to immigration enforcement and protect patients and staff. They highlight tangible policy changes we’ve been able to win and how we’ll continue mobilizing ✊

On Monday, EM resident and incoming Regional Vice President, Dr. Omar Taweh testified before the DC City Council and calling on them to restore full funding to the DC Healthcare Alliance.

As Dr. Taweh said, “we can intubate. We can resuscitate. But we cannot undo months of delayed care caused by lost access to insurance. The DC Healthcare Alliance is a lifeline for tens of thousands of low-income DC residents who are not eligible for Medicaid, many of whom are immigrants. As the federal government turns its back on the health of millions of Americans, DC has the choice to either step up or allow our community members to suffer.”

Over 4,000 Harvard graduate workers (HGSU-UAW) have been on strike for a week. After 14 months of negotiations and nearly a year without an active contract, 96% voted to strike.

CIR New England RVP Justin Halloran (Psych Resident, Cambridge Health Alliance) spoke at their rally to show that our doesn’t stop at hospital walls. It extends to every worker fighting for dignity, safety, and a future they can actually afford.

HGSU members are demanding:
✔️ livable wages
✔️ protections against harassment
✔️ adequate leave
✔️ protections for non-citizen workers

CIR members stand with UAW Region 9A Harvard Graduate Students Union - UAW & your fight for fairness and respect!
