Most mornings, I begin my journaling practice with a paragraph of gratitude. Writing down what I’m thankful for helps me shift out of my busy mind and into my heart, where I can connect with my higher power—God, or what some might call that still, quiet inner voice. In those moments, I ask questions and simply listen, allowing the answers to flow through my pen onto the page. Each time, I am amazed at the love, encouragement, and clarity that comes.
Lately, though, I had several looming deadlines. Instead of journaling, I went straight to the computer, telling myself I would get to it later. But “later” never came. Days slipped by without journaling—or my gratitude list—and I began to notice the effects. My body grew tired and achy, my joints stiff, and a sharp pain settled over my right temple. Since I rarely get headaches, I knew it was more than physical. My mind was caught in worry and fear, and my body was carrying the weight of it.
