“Change starts with meeting people where they are.”

That’s one of the core beliefs behind Jaynee Golden’s work, and it’s what makes her approach feel different for so many families.

Jaynee is a CRAFT‑certified therapist who uses the Invitation to Change model to help families navigate substance use, anxiety, and life transitions with curiosity, compassion, and practical tools.

In this article, she shares how her own experience as a family member of someone struggling with addiction fuels her work. She believes behaviors make sense and that when families understand why a loved one is using, they’re better equipped to support real change.

If you’ve been searching for a more hopeful, effective way forward, you’ll want to read this.

“Finally, there is a family-based treatment for addiction that works.” - Matthew McKay, Ph.D.

Beyond Addiction is addressed to families of people struggling with substance use, offering more than the outdated advice to “detach” or “tough love.”

Instead, it provides evidence-based tools to motivate and support real change, without sacrificing your own well-being in the process.

If you’ve ever felt helpless, overwhelmed, or unsure of what to do next… this book is for you. 💙

What is self-compassion, really? ✨

It’s not self-pity. It’s not letting yourself off the hook. It’s treating yourself the way you’d treat a friend who’s struggling.

The word “compassion” comes from Latin roots meaning "to suffer with". When someone you care about is in pain, you probably:
💖 Notice they’re hurting (mindfulness)
💖 Recognize that everyone suffers sometimes (common humanity)
💖 Respond with care and warmth (kindness)

🔁 Self-compassion is simply turning those same responses inward.

Instead of harsh self-judgment or ignoring your pain, it’s asking:
“This is really hard; how can I support myself right now?”

Kristin Neff (Self-Compassion by Kristin Neff, Ph.D.), one of the leading researchers in this field, identifies mindfulness, common humanity, and kindness as the three core components of self-compassion.

The research is clear:
✅ Self-compassionate people are more resilient
✅ More motivated by care than fear
✅ And more able to grow from setbacks

We’re all human. And self-compassion starts when we honor that.

Natural consequences aren’t about stepping away or giving up on boundaries. They’re about staying connected while allowing the world to offer its own kind of feedback.

When someone experiences the impact of their choices in a real, non-punitive way, it can open the door to reflection, and that reflection is often where meaningful change begins.

This approach isn’t passive. It’s active, thoughtful, and rooted in trust: trust that people grow through experience and that change is more likely when it’s internally motivated, not forced.

Staying present while letting natural consequences unfold can be hard. But it’s also one of the most compassionate ways to support change.

Because the most powerful motivators come from within.

Change is hard!

Not because of weak willpower, but because change disrupts the systems we’ve built to survive.

All behavior, especially behavior around substance use, serves a purpose. It may have helped you cope, feel safe, or avoid pain. And giving that up? It’s not just a decision. It’s a process.

People resist change when they:
🔹 Fear failure
🔹 Feel hopeless
🔹 Aren’t sure what change looks like
🔹 Don’t feel understood or supported

Change becomes possible when people feel safe, heard, and empowered! When you meet people where they are and believe in their capacity for growth, resistance starts to soften. 💛

Holidays can bring pressure to drink, but there is no one “right” way to do the 4th, only what’s right for you.

Here are a few gentle strategies that may help. 💙

If you’re living with PTSD, please know this...

We see you.
We believe you.
What happened to you doesn’t define who you are.

Your reactions make sense.
Your pain is valid.
And healing is possible.

Today, on , we hold space for anyone carrying the weight of trauma. Whether you speak about it out loud or carry it quietly, you deserve care, choice, and support that meets you with kindness. 💙

We want to say this clearly:
If you’ve slipped, stumbled, or gone back to an old behavior, it does NOT mean you’ve failed.

In fact, it means you’re in the process of change.
And the process is never a straight line.

At CMC, we don’t view return to use as moral failings.
They’re information, signals, a chance to reflect and recalibrate. But they are not a reason to give up!

Whether you’re working on changing your own substance use or supporting someone who is, please remember:

💬 Progress isn't linear
💬 Return to use happens
💬 You are not starting over

You’re learning, growing, and still moving forward.
