Did you know that Egypt is NOT part of Africa? At least that’s what the government official at the newly refurbished entrance of the Pyramids of Giza told me.
Upon entering, I was met with a little hostility due to the size of my necklace. I was pulled to the side and asked to remove it and some other articles of clothing because this was a sacred site.
I showed him the famous picture of a samurai who visited the pyramids back in 1864 and told him about my training. This was my third trip here, and I wanted to celebrate the fusion of African and samurai culture.
He wasn’t a fan.
I don’t mean samurai culture—he loved that! He made sure to tell me that not only has he seen the picture before, but he also loves Akira Kurosawa and has shot documentaries on samurai.
The problem was my outfit attracted too much “attention” and cause a distraction.
You know… from THE PYRAMIDS!
Wouldn’t you know it? Another man dressed in a full samurai training kimono and hakama shows up and says hello to me.
“Hey! You’re a samurai too! Amazing! Let’s get a photo together!” We take some shots as (my savior in MANY occasions) argues on my behalf in Arabic. She points out three “casually” dressed white girls who were granted access with no identification or modification to their appearance. As does my fellow palm-colored samurai brethren.
“Hmmm. So you’re telling me that I can’t wear my African necklace at the African pyramids?”
A wave of disdain washes over the official’s face. “These are not the African pyramids. These are the EGYPTIAN pyramids.”
Puzzled, I ask, “Isn’t Egypt in Africa?”
“No,” he replies.
“I know what you are trying to do,” he says, as if he caught me Gorilla Gluing the country back onto the continent.
“He’s one of those Afrocentrists,” he murmurs to one of his cohorts in Arabic.-
