When the orange, white and green ribbons of schooldays for Independence Day celebrations have been replaced by a watch gifted by loved ones...

When the crispy white school shirt and skirt have been replaced by breezy starched cotton saris...

When you may have changed multiple cities and homes over decades...

And yet the excitement to be on time for unfurling of the flag and to stand up with your fellow nationals for National Anthem remains the same as that of the 3 year old girl who entered school 4 decades ago... you know that your school has done a great job trying inculcating collective patriotic values in it's students...

Neither 26 January nor 15 August were a holiday for us those days. In fact we had compulsory attendance that day with absence carrying severe punishment next day!!! And no one anyways wanted to miss those days as we would have so many functions and prize distribution those 2 days. And though sometimes we wished we could take holiday if we were sick or something, we never dared to do so.

And every time I get ready to be on time for these functions wherever I may stay, I fondly remember those good old school days, my principal and my amazing teachers who took pains to inculcate that "the duties and responsibilities " of becoming a good citizen come before we ask for "rights" as a citizen! And those lessons had a deep impact on our young impressionable minds that stays back carrying a lot of nostalgia with it!

An ode to the dressing room and it's nursing staff...

It doesn't have the glamour or the thrill of the operation theatre...
Nor does it possess calm inquisitiveness with which we diagnose diseases in the OPD...
Contrary to these two most fascinating itineraries in a Plastic surgeon's daily routine...
Dressing room is a poor cousin of above two that is a witness to mundane routines of opening and closing dressings...

The surgeon usually comes here well aware of what to expect every single time...
And only rarely does the dressing room throw any surprises at it's surgeons...
Yet in it's mundaneness it a silent witness of a patient's healing journey...
Regularly checking upon a patient's progress...

Amongst all my staff that I have been working with in this hospital since nearly past 10 years, I meet Sr Sindhu in dressing room more than any other nursing staff either in OPD or in OT...
Yet this is the first ever picture that I have taken with her...

This post is dedicated to my dressing room staff who silently support me in my journey of helping patients heal, but whom I often forget to express my gratitude to as often as I would like to!

To the ones...

Who don't forget to get beautiful strings of jaismine and roses to complete our sari looks...

Who don't allow the tears to dare to spoil my kohl (unless of course its with tears of joy!)...

Who have brought in homecooked meals whenever I have been hospitalised...

Who have been partners in crimes climbing mountains with me and painting plein air sessions...

Who have done "Wah!Wah! for every bit of poetry that I have written"...

Who make my life smooth and soft just by their presence...

Whom I can call upon anytime and who can read my silences as well as my words...

With whom we have shared endless cups of coffees allowing each other to bare our hearts and lessen the burdens of mundane life...

With whom we never realise when an afternoon became night...

With whom laughters are always loud and unfiltered...

To the ones who have stood by like rocks strong and steady in all seasons of life....

Happy Friendship's day!

The post comes in a bit late and you all know why!!!.

And I had wanted to put in your pictures but then favorite people in life should be kept secrets to avoid evil eyes 🧿🤞... So just make do with these memories...😀😃😄!!!

Draped in this beautiful green and purple sari gifted by my parents and my sisters for this year's teej as sindhara; it was an absolutely lovely ....For when mothers choose saris for their daughters, the colours can never go wrong ❤️🥰🤞🧿🧿🧿!!!

Teej is one of the most special festivals of culture for which girls wait eagerly year long. We worship Shiva and Parvati this day. Parents sending in new green dresses, bangles and other elements of shringar like mehndi, bindis etc to their daughters along with ghewar and other delicacies pampering her and blessing her with a prosperous life and treating her like a little girl brings in a lot of nostalgia from childhood, making this a very tender and touching festivity.

And it was wonderful sharing my culture and treating my friends to our traditional cuisines...And I was glad they liked each of the dish that I had cooked...It was a lovely evening just simply being girls!!

A day that didn't go as per plans...but better than that 😀😃😄!!!

Beautiful monsoon morning in Bengaluru, and google maps show lesser traffic than usual as I head for my appointments. It shows I'll be half an hour earlier than the usual and I don't mind as I have plans to go for coffee and just enjoy the weather...

I'm on my way and suddenly the phone rings. My gynaecology colleague at other hospital calls that her 33 week pregnant patient had a fainting episode and has hit her head and is severely bleeding and she wants me to see her. I triage and decide to go to the other hospital to attend to this lady first. The scheduled appointments will need to be deferred I tell my receptionist.

I do the needful for my patient but that makes me 2 hours late to attend my ward patients and regular scheduled appointments. Some patients understanding and others upset at the delay. However there is nothing I can do as duty towards emergencies comes first...

And as I finish a busy day n drive back home, I accidentally bump into a former anesthesia colleague and a friend after long and we have an impromptu coffee date.... Finally the coffee that I had scheduled for 11:30 alone happens with a good friend at 5:30 ☕️👭...And we discuss all the challenging cases we have handled since we last met...

And then we quickly head home before the pleasant drizzle turns into a full fledged downpour...

So much for the uncertainties in lives of surgeons and anesthetists...

Doctor why are you late?

As a doctor and a professional, I lead a disciplined life and try my best to be punctual for my appointments. However many a times I just can't make it on time despite best efforts!

I value my patient's time and would like to see them at the time my team schedules their appointments however due to unpredictable nature of my profession as a , I sometimes have emergencies like burns and trauma patients which need my attention before my regular appointments. And this is the cause of delays. Most of my patients are understanding of this fact and appreciative of the work that we do. However, there are many who are not ready to accept the facts and become bitter at times and create unpleasant scenarios with the front desk staff, nurses and other staff.

These kind of incidents were rare when we started practising but seem to be increasing with every passing year.

Empathy towards doctors on this front from public would be in the interest of public and would allow doctors to serve you better because it's just matter of chance and anyone could be at the receiving end of needing emergency care and doctors should have the autonomy to triage their patients in general interest to serve humanity.

It's important to understand that no doctor ever does this on purpose.

Gratitude is one of the most beautiful things one can practice. It's something that unconsciously attracts more things that one can be grateful for!

And this little gesture of gratitude by my 5 year old patient Loukya was a beautiful way to begin my OPD with!

As a medical student whenever I read the famous 15th century English proverb that states that "To be a good surgeon one needs an eagle's eyes, a lion's heart and a lady's hands" ; I always used to wonder why despite this old proverb, women hardly ever took surgery as the speciality. The fact was that it a cent per cent male dominated field and women taking surgery was not allowed by even the best of institutes and the first woman surgeon actually disguised herself as a man throughout her life and career as a surgeon for the love of becoming a surgeon.

In my MS batch of 10, I was the only woman pursuing surgery and so also in my 2 senior batches there was only one woman trainee each. The surgical training at that time was much tougher and intensive and the hierarchy ran very deep. It was so tough that sometimes even men left the course after a few months. So women in surgery was a rare rare sight. The scenario is changing now though and for good with nearly 40-50% surgical seats being opted for by women.

As I sit reflecting about my surgical journey, I realise how far not just I but the speciality has come in the past two decades.

Clinical Note : This case was of a young child who had accidentally fallen and sustained a through and through injury of his lower lip due to piercing by his tooth. It was a finding that had got missed during intial emergency evaluation where only outside wound was reported. Hence, the need for thorough evaluation of injuries by a plastic surgeon.

This gentleman had come over around 3 weeks ago with road traffic accident leading to frictional burns allover his face and left upper limb along with deep and dirty lacerations at the base of the nostril and also another one involving his upper lip Cupid's bow... While the nostril base laceration can be forgiving in its scar appearance, the one on the Cupid's bow involving the white roll if not done accurately makes itself visible from distance...

He came for his follow up today and is very happy with his healing and to be back to his work without any more bandages now and we as a team are happy to have been of help!!

Since its still very early results and we have initiated him on scar management protocols, his scars would further improve with time and would hopefully become inconspicuous over time...
