Whenever we choose dignity, integrity and grace in face of adversities of life (even when we deserved better and despite knowing that we deserved better!), we choose "Maryada Purushottam", Shri Rama!

Though Rama is the Lord himself, even if we all can emulate even a miniscule of his personality, the world would be a much better place to live in!

Happy Ram Navami to all!

The simple joy of sharing an evening over coffee β˜•οΈπŸ₯‚with a dear friend and a fellow after work makes for a perfect way to wind up the day!

Friends of same age group and wavelength are so essential to be able to discuss how life and priorities are changing as we are ageing and how things that seemed so very important 5 years ago no longer seem that important now and how the hurried ways of life are wanting to turn to days where we actually want to sip and relish our coffee β˜•οΈ having deep conversations with those very few people who actually can understand our depths and have the capacity to hold that depth...And how frivolousness no longer finds any space in our lives and how intolerant we are becoming to games, superficial social interactions and meaningless conversations...

A lovely evening, well spent!

When should a woman with large sized breasts consider a ?

1) Functional problems like pain in back, neck, shoulders, slouched posture, deep bra strap marks, infections on the undersurface of breasts, difficulty in exercising, breathing and sometimes even sleeping.

2) Aesthetic problems like embarrasment in social settings and wanting to cover the chest with a large dupatta/stole and difficulty in finding appropriate bra and well fitting clothes.

Breast reduction is one of the most satisfying 😊 Aesthetic surgery procedures as women report drastic positive changesπŸ’ͺ in their life after this procedure.

If are bothering you, a consultation with an experienced may help

Morning walk treasure hunt πŸ‚πŸƒand lessons in Philosophy and Botany!

A canopy of Indian Almond tree or Terminalia Catappa lines my morning walk route, enchanting me almost everyday with its ever changing hues...Today morning I managed to find a treasure of three of its leaves under the tree each in a strikingly rich hue, each battered and consumed by the "cycle of life and death" yet each bold, beautiful and true to itself until it's last breath...

Though I knew the common name for this tree, curiosity made me read about it in details today including it's official botanical name. It is commonly used in aquariums to lower pH to create an environment suitable for certain fishes. It is also used in traditional medicines as an antiinflammatory and to improve digestion and it's fruits taste like almond and are edible. Also it prevents soil erosion by holding the soil together and os hence commonly planted on beaches ⛱️ too!!!

Lessons aplenty from "fallen" leaves of this beautiful tree!!!

If there is any creature that I saw today in entire Bangalore (believe me I travelled more than 70km on road today πŸ˜…!).....that actually knows the meaning of "Sunday afternoon siesta..." it was this beauty 🐈🐱sleeping happily outside a store that I visited today!

And I remembered the famous saying, "Nature doesn't hurry up anything yet everything gets done." And lamented how we humans have forgotten the meaning of slowing down and living...

Mentor and mentee relationship!

Mentors play a very important role in shaping young mentees who come like raw clay to us and we can mould them into any form that we want. It is imperative on the mentor to mould the mentee into someone better than what he/she was before and to add to his knowledge and skills in the respective field. Not just that a good mentor also has the capacity to shape a mentee's personality and belief systems and instil ethics and values in them.

I have been tremendously blessed with some amazing mentors across the country and the globe who have shaped me not just as a surgeon but as a person too.

When Ajit, my first official postgraduate trainee came to be posted under my unit, I had very little expectations of him. He was a general surgery second year resident with no exposure to plastic surgery, was perpetually dressed in OT scrubs all the time before coming to my unit and moved around quietly taking instructions and working but felt as if he was always under some kind of fear.

A month and a half of posting with me, with strict instructions that he must dress up formally at work, he took my advice seriously. And contrary to my low expectations from him, he worked so hard that by the end of his posting one could actually mistake him for a plastic surgery resident.

Happy and impressed with his dedication, we gave him a farewell party from our unit and I asked him what was the major takeaways he took from working with me. He said, "Ma'am you taught me self respect and self confidence and a no compromise attitude at work besides the various surgical procedures that I learnt with you!"

His answer made me reflect on my own journey as a mentee and what all my mentors have done for me during my official trainings and what they still keep doing and how they keep inspiring me still whenever I interact with them.

Gratitude to all my mentors and carrying forward your teachings to my students makes me delighted!

A lot goes into planning and executing ORIF for maxillofacial injuries!

We had a young patient with panfacial fractures which means a lot of his face bones were fractured as a result of which he was in severe pain, had facial deformity and was unable to eat anything. He underwent IMF followed by ORIF with us today. From discussing the CT scans to sutures to approaches and a brief about the fixation of fractures with my residents and nursing staff, I enjoyed every bit of today's surgery!

And the patient's face πŸ€•...We fixed it and restored its anatomy like a jig saw puzzle 😎 with plates and screws!

When it's just another routine procedure and after it your postgraduate says, "Ma'am it was a beautiful and meticulous dissection " and you wonder why does she feel that way when it's just a routine thing with routine steps that you have been doing day in and day out.

And then you realise it is years of training with some very fine teachers and then operating independently for more than a decade that those steps have become your reflex actions while the postgraduate is just a year into residency and learning what you did 2 decades ago!

When your non medico friends πŸ‘πŸ‘«πŸ‘¬πŸ§‘β€πŸ€β€πŸ§‘πŸ‘have off and on been asking you since past 2 decades.... "Have you seen Grey's anatomy? And is your life as a doctor similar to the life of doctors' shown on Grey's anatomy!!??"

But the only Gray's anatomy that you have ever known, seen and read is the one below - the anatomy book that has been the Bible or the go to book for all medicos for learning Anatomy!

Nostalgic revising skull anatomy after long from this masterpiece...Anatomy is the basis of all surgery and off and on brushing it up is mandatory for us as surgeons!

And this picture πŸ“Έ was mandatory in interest of my non medico friends as to what "Gray's Anatomy" means to us!! πŸ˜…πŸ€“πŸ˜Ž

This 14 year old boy in his curious and adventerous spirit stole metallic sodium from his Chemistry lab and put it in water causing it to burst into flames.

Not only did he have thermal burns but also chemical burns and underwent specialised dressings and skin grafting for certain areas with us.

While most of him has healed well and after scar management protocol will heal further, he has developed a corneal opacity hampering clear vision.

He was recently discharged after nearly a month of stay.

Such burns are best treated by a trained in advanced burn care as they can provide comprehensive management with fluids, specialised dressings and if need be do any surgical intervention.

"See one, do one and teach one" goes the medical training adage since times immemorial and that implied that any trainee learning a medical procedure should see an expert performing it once, do it under supervision of an expert after observing and then teach it to someone to master a particular procedure.

And here my postgraduates are doing the same... After learning from me the Kleinert's protocol of physiotherapy after flexor tendon repair, my outgoing PG, Ajit is putting it for a patient while my incoming PG, Meghana watches him do once and then Ajit supervises her while she puts it for next patient.

So also for arch bar removal in OT which they both after observing me are doing under my supervision...

The adage has been used over decades and served well. However, it has undegone a further refinement in recent times and now goes by the following version,

"See many and learn from each of their outcomes,
Do many and learn from each of their outcomes
And teach many and learn from each of their outcomes..."

Women's Day celebration at our institute yesterday!

A gathering of women celebrating each other and of supportive men celebrating women, it was a beautiful event!!!

Women have so much to gain by giving support to each other. And sometimes it comes in the simplest of forms. Like my Surgery PRO Anuja and other front desk women prodding me a day before that I should only wear a sari for the event. Anuja even promised to get me a string of mallige or jasmine if I wore a sari and came. Their insistence was out of their sheer love ❀️ for me and I obliged by wearing a which stands for justice! And Anuja, the ever lovely girl that she is, actually brought a string of mallige for me that I wore to honour her love and promise!

It has been wrongly marketed that women are Women's worst enemies. That is true only for insecure women but that is also true of insecure men who can harm others. Truly secure PEOPLE (both men and women) and I write that in capital to emphasise it's significance; never pull others down. They are always supportive and kind to others!

Three cheers to all the lovely women who support each other and also to the wonderful men who support women around them!!

Women's day is special only when both men and women come to celebrate the source of all life, beauty and grace ie Women!!!
