When the orange, white and green ribbons of schooldays for Independence Day celebrations have been replaced by a watch gifted by loved ones...
When the crispy white school shirt and skirt have been replaced by breezy starched cotton saris...
When you may have changed multiple cities and homes over decades...
And yet the excitement to be on time for unfurling of the flag and to stand up with your fellow nationals for National Anthem remains the same as that of the 3 year old girl who entered school 4 decades ago... you know that your school has done a great job trying inculcating collective patriotic values in it's students...
Neither 26 January nor 15 August were a holiday for us those days. In fact we had compulsory attendance that day with absence carrying severe punishment next day!!! And no one anyways wanted to miss those days as we would have so many functions and prize distribution those 2 days. And though sometimes we wished we could take holiday if we were sick or something, we never dared to do so.
And every time I get ready to be on time for these functions wherever I may stay, I fondly remember those good old school days, my principal and my amazing teachers who took pains to inculcate that "the duties and responsibilities " of becoming a good citizen come before we ask for "rights" as a citizen! And those lessons had a deep impact on our young impressionable minds that stays back carrying a lot of nostalgia with it!
