Pleased to share our recent publication in the International Journal of Gynecology & Obstetrics, where we examine how diabetes technology for women with hyperglycemia in pregnancy can become a pathway to closing, rather than widening, global gaps in care.

Hyperglycemia in pregnancy affects nearly one in six births worldwide. Yet over 90% of these pregnancies occur in low- and middle-income countries, where protocols developed for high-resource environments are often difficult to implement.

When recommendations depend on costly tools without parallel strategies for adaptation, the women most at risk remain the least served. Through FIGO’s lens, we argue that contextualisation is not compromise. It is the route to justice.

Global standards must be accompanied by pragmatic options, locally workable models, and sustained investment in evidence generation across diverse settings.

Whether through technology, workforce strengthening, or tiered resource approaches, every woman deserves care that is both high quality and realistically deliverable. If we are serious about improving outcomes, we must design systems that travel well—from tertiary centres to remote clinics—and support providers everywhere to act with confidence.

The conversation on diabetes in pregnancy is also a conversation about fairness, access, and responsibility.

Equity in maternal health cannot remain an aspiration, it must be engineered into the guidance we create and the technologies we recommend.
