PCOS and OHSS – Should You Really Be Worried?
If you have PCOS and are planning for IVF, you might have searched about OHSS (Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome) on Google, Instagram, or ChatGPT.
Here are the real numbers to understand the risk:
✔ In women without PCOS, the risk of OHSS is very low — about 1–2 out of 100 IVF cycles.
✔ In women with PCOS, the ovaries respond more strongly, so mild OHSS can occur in about 20 out of 100 IVF cycles.
✔ Severe OHSS is very rare — around 1–2 out of 100 IVF cycles.
The good news is that with modern and safer IVF techniques, the risk can be controlled and almost prevented.
Doctors may use safer approaches such as:
• Modifying the injection dose
• Changing the trigger (maturation) injection
• Freezing embryos when required
👉 Having PCOS does not mean IVF is dangerous.
It simply means you need a personalized and safer IVF plan.
