As we begin to wind down for the year, we are wondering, how has your emotional health been so far? How do you imagine resting towards the end of 2022 and into 2023? Let us know in the comments.

There has been much conversation regarding the controversial attempt by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment to subcategorize Transgender individuals under the OBC category. This move reproduces a homogenizing effect by which one form of identification (I.e., gender) gets diluted into another form of identification (I.e., caste).

This effect and the phenomenon of dilution become a vital argument to necessitate a clearer understanding of Intersectionality in policy formulation and even legislation.

Intersectionality materializes in the microcosm of everyday life in order to organize it, rendering certain forms of privilege to some while leaving some with the feeling of powerlessness.

We discuss more on this proposal in our recent piece.

Phase II of  , with , focuses on Interpersonal Relationships. The section has been informed by research and the needs analysis conducted at the beginning of the program. During the course of the program, the facilitators have gotten to know more about the adolescents and their lives. Subsequently, this section has also come to be strongly shaped by the hopes our facilitators have harboured for the adolescent's current and future interpersonal relationships. Here is a peek into the journey of holding these hopes and witnessing some of them be fulfilled.

Project Aarzoo came into being through the combined efforts of and (a developmental organization), with an aim to facilitate young professionals in their journey. For this purpose, individuals were divided into two cohorts following separate training programs; young professionals consisting of first-time service holders and their managers.
We are excited to share glimpses of Project Aarzoo with you, beginning with details about the cohorts. Stay tuned to follow our journey!

Phase II of focuses on Interpersonal Relationships. Having quality interpersonal connections is essential to well-being. Based on the adolescents’ needs that were identified at the start and also during the course of the program, this section aims to support the adolescents to build healthier relationships by understanding relationships better, improving communication, learning to address conflict, building empathy and drawing boundaries. Since the beginning, the adolescents have displayed a keenness to learn more about interpersonal relationships and other members of the group, as seen in the feedback/ comments shared in the baseline assessment. Stories, discussions, reflective questions, roleplays were some of the modalities employed to support the adolescents' journeys.

Schizophrenia is often spoken of as a collection of symptoms: delusions, hallucinations, erratic bodily movements, disorganization of speech etc. Yet we often forget that these radical difficulties are sometimes a part of a person’s everyday life experience. As individuation and independence become increasingly prized, even within collectivist societies; what happens to individuals living with schizophrenia who continue a dependence of one kind or another throughout their life? This dependence exists in the realms of medicines, caretakers, hospitals etc. One goes through a painful, sometimes piercing alienation of existing differently. Culture adds other layers to this experience of dis-order and difference. For instance, hearing voices and hallucinations are often linked to having a unique connection with God in India. This affinity protects one’s social image, where the expression of schizophrenia is not seen as a disability to cure but a ground of respected difference. In societies that do not form such links and designate symptoms solely in need of cure, people are often socially alienated, and painfully forgotten. Reshma’s story can reside within us as a salient reminder of the difficulties individuals living with Schizophrenia face , not only due to the condition, but also from their constant negotiations in the world to be seen as human: with ordinary complexities, dreams, aspirations and crises. All our lives are deeply intertwined with the different social identities we identify with or are attached to. Expressed as ‘Intersectionality’, our Mental Health programs and work with individuals, groups and communities, take into account the life experiences generated by each one of these identities (e.g., gender, caste, s*x, religion, income, disability etc.) by understanding its interaction/role in our positioning in society and the effect on our wellbeing. These conversations often find space and voice in academic circles, but don't equally translate into our everyday lives and the local spaces we occupy. As an organisation that values taking a relevant socio-cultural lens, we are initiating a series to better locate our (often moving) position across the spectrum of power and powerlessness. This can help to deepen our understanding of the role systems and institutions play and help us to honour lived realities of both marginalization and privilege. || With this series, our efforts are to explore how our understanding and insights on power & marginalization can be actualized to help us better support ourselves and each other in everyday life. ||

We had asked q***r individuals what are some ways in which they feel inhibited to live and love. Hear them share their thoughts and experiences on encountering q***rphobia and on what Recognition, Expression and Choice means for the community.

Thank you for sharing with us, Farah, Fariha, Dolly, Shreya. 🌸

Does the Right of choice and right of expression among q***r and other vulnerable communities in India come into direct conflict with our culturally embedded value systems? When we investigate the normative image of the family and make it our primary unit of analysis, we see how it has gone through the historico-political phenomenon of disciplinarization wherein certain practices have been ‘normalized’ whereas others have been stigmatized. With the arrival of new forms of kinship, mainly and historically characterized as atypical, seeking socio-political as well as structural-institutional representation, we also see new forms of exclusionary policing in both public and civil arenas owing to the atypicality of their q***r relationships. A phenomenon that we observe against this counter-productive policing is the need within the q***r consciousness to look for safe spaces wherein they can express their intimacy and stigmatized ‘atypicality’. These alternative sites seek to provide unhindered human expression (safe spaces) We had asked q***r individuals what are some ways in which they feel inhibited to live and love. Here’s a sneak peek of what they had to say. The International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia is observed on the 17th of May, and aims to coordinate international events that raise awareness of LGBT rights violations and stimulate interest in LGBT rights work worldwide.

Over the last year of The Collective, we took several points of pause to reflect on the different ways The Collective is shape-shifting, on the in-session engagements and on the value of the Session topics and resources.

So far, the Community met every month to deliberate, discuss and share. And each time we met, there were new reflections and insights, not just for the participants, but also for us - as facilitators of the space.

The Collective was envisioned to be a peer-led, community influenced space and the last several monthly sessions have been an actualization of that vision. Upon reflecting, we felt the need to make space for an organic and unbarred flow within the sessions to allow for sufficient time and space to absorb and intentionally engage.

For this purpose, we are now transitioning into a quarterly format, where we will collectively select a THEME for the entire quarter and explore it in-depth over the course of three months. Between sessions, we will continue the interaction and learnings with resource sharing, conversations and more.

For the next quarter of The Collective 2022, we are discussing:

Relationships and Mental Health - Working with different kinds of relationships in psychotherapy.

Over the next 3 months, we will cover the following areas:

1. May - Intimate Relationships

2. June - Familial Relationships

3. July - Other Relationships (e.g., friendships)

More to follow on each of these topics shortly.
