Visited RIT National Technical Institute for the Deaf this week and it provided an inspiring view of their approach to inclusive education for deaf and hard of hearing students. NTID is doing extensive work including collaborations, outreach services and its dedication to empowering students through counseling and advocacy. The classroom observation was particularly impactful, as I saw NTID’s commitment to creating a blended learning environment where both deaf and hearing students could participate. Instructors, many of whom are deaf or trained in ASL, deliver direct instruction, supported by interpreters for mixed group classes. NTID’s initiatives go beyond academics, nurturing a sense of belonging, self-acceptance and family support, all aimed at preparing students for fulfilling futures. This holistic approach enables students not only to envision paths for career grown but also to embrace their identities fully. Thanks to Asst Dean Thomastine Sarchet-Maher, EdD and the President Dr. Gerry for taking time to explain and make the visit possible.

RIT National Technical Institute for the Deaf is a unique college within the Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester founded in 1965, NTID was the first and remains one of the largest technical colleges in the world created specifically for deaf and hard-of-hearing students. It offers a wide range of programs, from technical and professional degrees to support services like sign language interpretation, notetaking, and tutoring to support its students in RIT’s wider programs. NTID also offers both associate and bachelor's degrees, with options to complete further studies at RIT in a fully inclusive environment.
One of the institute’s unique strengths is its approach to accessible technology and innovation, ensuring students gain skills that equip them for careers in various fields, from computing to the arts. NTID’s collaborative research initiatives further support its students and contribute to the broader field of accessible education, making it a leader in technology-based deaf education.

I am excited to share that under Equip the Special Million Project supported by ANZ we have made incredible strides in supporting development in the last 3 years. Through and screening for , we are addressing red flags and debunking myths to ensure every child gets the support they need. Our efforts in educating school teachers and community health workers are providing invaluable. Thanks to our training, more children are being identified early and receiving crucial early stimulation. In June, we have started our month-long training program with Vatsalya Trust and 32 classroom teachers and community workers are getting the required training free of cost under this mission.

Join us in celebrating these achievements and continue to support our mission of empowering every child.

The Story About Us

Autism Learning Hub is the digital learning and resource platform designed to empower parents with knowledge, advice, hands on training and guidance to help them create resource unit at their home where facilities are not sufficient yet. Autism Learning Hub is not just another typical “autism platform”. It is a powerful idea to provide support to each child with autism at every part of India ! We hope to bring a change in the perspective of seeing a person with autism from “no expectation” to “realistic expectation”.

THE BACKGROUND

Today over 2.1 million people across India are diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder#. There is 1 in every 54 children with an Autism Spectrum Condition as per global data# and it is the third most common developmental disorder. Despite the progression in technology, communication, infrastructure, hundreds of smaller cities and towns in India are deprived of having proper intervention centres for children with autism from young childhood to their adult level. Limited centres are either overcrowded or are not equipped with latest intervention pedagogy and strategies.
