Visited RIT National Technical Institute for the Deaf this week and it provided an inspiring view of their approach to inclusive education for deaf and hard of hearing students. NTID is doing extensive work including collaborations, outreach services and its dedication to empowering students through counseling and advocacy. The classroom observation was particularly impactful, as I saw NTID’s commitment to creating a blended learning environment where both deaf and hearing students could participate. Instructors, many of whom are deaf or trained in ASL, deliver direct instruction, supported by interpreters for mixed group classes. NTID’s initiatives go beyond academics, nurturing a sense of belonging, self-acceptance and family support, all aimed at preparing students for fulfilling futures. This holistic approach enables students not only to envision paths for career grown but also to embrace their identities fully. Thanks to Asst Dean Thomastine Sarchet-Maher, EdD and the President Dr. Gerry for taking time to explain and make the visit possible.
