When we are small… Dad is our hero.

Then we grow up… and we start questioning him.

We argue, we ignore, we think we know better…

But life has a way of teaching us what Dad was trying to teach all along.

My father didn’t mould me with big speeches.

He shaped me with values, discipline, sacrifice and silent strength.

Today when I look back at my journey…

I realise that every strong decision I made, every time I chose integrity over convenience, every time I stayed grounded despite success… it was his blessings and his upbringing working through me.

Although it’s not truly an achievement but good to know from Medtronic that we achieved this never before feat of performing 50 robotic spine surgeries in the first month of inception of Manipal Institute of Robotic Spine Surgery @ Manipal Hospital, Old Airport Road, Bangalore, India.

Among the remarkable success stories is a 15-year-old Bangladeshi girl suffering from scoliosis, underwent the first-of-its-kind robotic scoliosis correction surgery in South India

A 6-years old boy from Oman presented with Juvenile Idiopathic Thoracolumbar Scoliosis of over 50-degrees in 2018. We did unilateral growth rod and reviewed him in 2019 to see that the lowest screw had broken. We revised the screw and distracted.

Child couldn’t come back for annual distractions because of Covid-19 situation and returned only in 2022 when he was 10-years old and the triradiate cartilage was still open. We distracted again and he returned this year with completion of spinal growth.

We did perform growth rod removal and Full Robotic-assisted Thoracolumbar Scoliosis Correction and instrumented fusion successfully. The child walked on the same evening after surgery and was discharged the next day. He was reviewed after a week and sent back home to Oman. It is now over a month of surgery and the child is back to school.

It’s heartening to see a good clinical outcome despite adversities of screw breakage and lack of distraction for 3-years due to Covid situation.

Point to be noted - I do use unilateral growth rods so that we could use the opposite side to bail out in case of failure of growth rods construct and has given reasonable results except for one child wherein I had to revise to bilateral rods after rod breakage twice (however the pre-op kyphoscoliosis in this child was nearly 90-degrees).

I thank God for ending this year with this good clinical outcome and the child benefiting from robotic assisted scoliosis correction surgery for the final stage.

Looking forward to help many more children with spinal deformities from 2024 onwards.
