Dr. Rekha Mahesh explains the importance of DNA Fragmentation Index (DFI) testing in assessing s***m DNA integrity and its direct impact on fertility outcomes. DNA damage—whether single or double-stranded—can cause abnormal genomes and increase the risk of miscarriages if natural repair mechanisms fail.
DFI testing is especially advised for men facing unexplained infertility, recurrent pregnancy loss, failed IUIs, poor s***m morphology, or before undergoing IVF treatment.
At KVH Fertility Center, the S***m Chromatin Dispersion method is used for accurate evaluation. Semen samples are analyzed for motility, morphology, and concentration, followed by gel processing, incubation, lysis, and staining. Under 100x magnification, s***m with large or medium halos indicate healthy DNA, while small or no halos signify fragmentation.
A DFI of ≤15% is normal, 15–30% borderline, and >30% suggests poor s***m quality that can affect conception and pregnancy success.
