Every year, the World Health Organisation (WHO) marks October 10 as World Mental Health Day with an overall objective to raise awareness about mental health issues across the world and to mobilize efforts in support of mental health.
Mental health is one of the most neglected areas of public health. According to studies, nearly 1 billion people are living with a mental disorder, 3 million people die every year from the harmful use of alcohol and one person dies every 40 seconds by su***de.
Every year, the day is marked with a particular theme, and this year the World Mental Health Day 2021 theme is ‘Mental Health in an Unequal World’ that focuses on reducing the gap between the ‘haves’ and the ‘have nots’. A gap that is growing wider with time and there is continuing unmet need in the care of people with mental health problems.
People should look out for the following as possible signs of a mental health disorder:
* withdrawing from friends, family, and colleagues
* avoiding activities that they would normally enjoy
* sleeping too much or too little
* eating too much or too little
* feeling hopeless
* having consistently low energy
* using mood-altering substances, including alcohol and ni****ne, more frequently
* displaying negative emotions
* being confused
* being unable to complete daily tasks, such as getting to work or cooking a meal
* having persistent thoughts or memories that reappear regularly
* thinking of causing physical harm to themselves or others
* hearing voices
* experiencing delusions
