Self care different dimensions!
Self-care goes far beyond a face mask and a bubble bath. In reality, self-care is an investment in your own physical and mental well-being rather than a singular state of relaxation (Skovholt & Trotter-Mathison, 2011).
However, you may struggle with finding optimal and effective self-care regimes that fit into your busy and continuously evolving schedule. You may feel like you don’t have any more time to offer to your self-care other than slapping on that face mask before bed. By all means, we are not stopping you from doing this, especially if you feel like it relaxes you.
The purpose of this post is to broaden your perspective on self-care and how it can be implemented in different domains of your personal life (beyond physical relaxation). As you can see, there are five different domains of therapeutic self-care, namely physical, emotional, people, spiritual, and lifestyle (Scott, 2021).
Within each domain, you will find a list of activities, concepts, or people that can contribute to your well-being by investing in them. You may find calmness and serenity in certain domains more than others, like if you feel that spending time with family and speaking to your therapist helps you stay grounded, then people-related self-care activities may be most beneficial for you, whereas a combination of activities within each domain may be the best solution for someone else. Self-care is not a “one size fits all” concept!
We urge you to look at self-care beyond a state of current relaxation and rather as an ongoing process to restore balance and find relief from different stressors in your life.
