[Part 2/2] Got your first mammogram and the results left you confused?

This post dives into the mammogram experience, explores common findings like calcifications, masses, and asymmetries, and explains how the BI-RADS score (0-6) interprets them.

Remember, a mammogram is a valuable screening tool, but a complete picture of your breast health may involve further evaluation.

Early detection is most effective with a combination of self-exams, clinical exams, and potentially other imaging tests as recommended by your doctor.

Taking control of your breast health starts with knowledge.

Mammography is a powerful tool for identifying abnormalities, but navigating the different types can be confusing

This 2-part series is your guide to everything mammography-related!

What is a Mammogram? An X-ray picture of your breast tissue to detect hidden changes.

Screening vs. Diagnostic Mammograms:
Screening: Annual preventive exams for early detection.
Diagnostic: More detailed test if there are visible symptoms .

2D vs. 3D (Tomosynthesis):
2D: Standard mammograms offering X-ray images.
3D: Newer technology creating detailed 3D pictures, potentially reducing unnecessary follow-ups.

Remember, a mammogram is just one piece of the puzzle.
Early detection is most effective with a combination of self-exams, clinical exams, and potentially other imaging tests as recommended by your doctor.

Don't just be Aware, be equipped: Breast Cancer Screening Options (Part 2/2) ️
Following our post on the importance of breast cancer screening , let's understand the types of screening options:

1. Breast Self-Exam (BSE): Know your breasts, regular self-exams empower early detection.
2. Clinical Breast Exam (CBE): A doctor examines the breasts manually to detect abnormalities.
3. Mammograms: The gold standard for detecting breast cancer early.
4. Breast Ultrasound: Provides a clearer picture for dense breasts or suspicious lumps.
5. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI): High-tech imaging used for high-risk individuals.
6. Molecular Breast Imaging (MBI): A newer approach targeting specific cancer cell activity (not widely available yet).

Remember, the best screening approach is personalized.

Ever wondered what those breast cancer screenings are all about? This post is your guide to understanding the basics!

(Part 1/2)

Screening vs. Diagnosis: Screenings are proactive tests done on healthy people to detect cancer early, while diagnostic tests are used to confirm a suspected cancer after symptoms appear.

Risk Categories:

Average Risk: Most women fall into this category.

Increased Risk: Certain factors like family history or genetics can put you at higher risk.

Your Screening Schedule:

Average Risk: The recommended frequency depends on age and individual preferences.

Increased Risk: A doctor will recommend a personalized screening plan (often starting earlier and more frequently).

Stay tuned for Part 2 where we'll dive into the different types of screenings! ➡️

Did you know that not all breast cancers present themselves as lumps?

When it comes to breast health, knowledge is power! ⚕

Swipe to know more about the different types of breast cancers and their associated differences.

Not all lumps are created equal

In Situ Types (Non-invasive): These are pre-cancers, like DCIS and LCIS, contained within the milk ducts or lobules.

Invasive Types: These cancers have spread beyond their origin, with IDC and ILC being the most common.

Beyond the lump: Less common types to be aware of:

Inflammatory Breast Cancer (IBC): This aggressive form can appear as breast skin redness and thickening.

Paget's Disease: This rare type affects the ni**le and ar**la, often presenting with a rash or scaling.

Determining subtypes based on IHC Test Results

This test analyzes the cancer cells for hormone receptors (estrogen & progesterone) and the HER2 protein. Knowing these helps determine the subtype.
It is important to understand the type and subtype of your breast cancer as this allows for personalised treatment options!

📍Did you know most breast cancers start in either the milk-producing glands (lobules) or the milk-carrying tubes (ducts)?

Understanding breast cancer starts at the cellular level!🧬

Our bodies are made of trillions of tiny building blocks called cells. These cells have a complex instruction manual called DNA, with specific chapters known as genes that tell them what to do.

When these genes change, cells can grow out of control, leading to cancer.
Breast cells can become cancerous in different locations:
1. Lobules: Milk-producing glands (8% of infiltrating cancers)
2. Ducts: Milk-carrying tubes (72% of infiltrating cancers)

Here's a surprising fact: Breast cancer cells can sometimes appear normal under a microscope!

That is why early detection through regular screenings is crucial.
