✅️ The practice of Ushapan or drinking water first thing in the morning has been memtioned recently around 13 century A.D. (Remember that Ayurveda dates back to 2nd century B.C and drinking water first thing in the morning has been nowhere memtioned in the earlier texts)
✅️This practice is recommended only when you wake up in the Brahma Muhurta (4:20 a.m. to 6 :00 a.m.). Even the quanity is very precisely mentioned which is approximately 640 ml. (Not crazy amount of water like 5 glasses which people are practicing nowadays)
✅️Remember, any kind of water wheter cold or hot is a coolant and when water is poured on fire , the fire goes off, right? Therefore, when you drink a large amount of water without any thirst first thing in the morning, you are putting off your digestive fire thus creating problems like frequent colds and coughs, acidity (very commonly seen in people who drink a lot of water in the morning)
✅️Also, if you feel like you cannot empty your bowels i.e. cannot have proper motions without drinking water, this means that there is a problem with the Apana Vayu (type of vata responsible for p**p, fart, urine and menstrual flow) . In other words, there can be a problem with your peristaltic movements and this requires (Ayurvedic) intervention.
✅️Ayurveda does not recommend eating or drinking anything without the urge of hunger and thirst. So, if you are practicing drinking water empty stomach only because you think its good for the health or Ayurveda recommends it, you need to stop practicing this.
❓️What can be done❓️
✅️If you have been practicing this for long, it is not easy to stop. However, you can try reducing the quantity of water (make it half glass or one glass) and if you feel constipated when you don't drink large amount of water in the morning, I would highly recommend that you consult an Ayurvedic doctor for the same
