Child Taking Efforts to Maintain Enthusiasm | Ball Catch | RDI Activities for Autism & ADHD

We tend to always take initiative for our kids and make them play with us but in RDI one of our goal is to test our children if they are ready to take initiative and build enthusiasm in the game.

This will also teach them how they will have to take initiatives in the outside world.

Objective - • Students exert at least an equal amount of effort to initiate and maintain enthusiasm during joint engagements. Students make legitimate attempts to reengage partners who appear less enthusiastic, by taking actions that are clearly intended to increase their partner's enthusiasm.

Body Awareness with Co-regulation | Legs Pick & Drop | RDI Activities for Autism & ADHD

For autistic children studies show that vigorous activity for more than 20 minutes can help decrease stereotypical behaviours, hyperactivity, and aggression. Exercise not only helps autistic children better engage in the environment, but it also helps promote weight loss and leads to better overall health.

Full-body exercises are best for autistic kids to increase coordination, strength, endurance, and body awareness.

What could be better if we include co-regulation with some full body movement exercises.

Fun Opening Activity for all Ages | Peekaboo | RDI Activities for Autism & ADHD

When working with our children on various goals, always start with an activity which is not very goal base, but the only goal is to have fun together, so that a certain playful bond can be developed between the parents & child.

Just 5-7 minutes of fun activity and then we can start with the regular chores or anything we have in mind.

Fun Outdoor Engagement & New Experiences | Sword Play | RDI Activities for Autism & ADHD
New experiences can be very difficult for some children with autism. As such, many parents avoid new experiences because their children are often happier when settled into a routine. This is completely understandable, but children with autism, like all children, need to experience new things. New experiences help a child grow intellectually, adjust socially and learn coping skills.

Co-regulation & Motor Coordination | Ping Pong | RDI Activities for Autism & ADHD

Motor coordination is the ability to use multiple body parts for a particular action.
For example, dribbling a basketball means using your arm and hand to bounce the ball while your feet and legs move you around the court.

Co regulation is the simple back-and-forth interaction between the guide (parent or teacher) and apprentice (child or adult).

Co regulation is the simplest form or the prototype of communication.

The pattern seen in this video is a Assembly line pattern, and building patterns with our children is the first step to building Co-regulation.

Experience Sharing & Communication | Tasting food | RDI Activities for Autism & ADHD

Helping children with autism spectrum disorders begin sharing experiences, in a meaningful way, works to improve the core deficits of autism and the quality of life.

While imperative communication is necessary at times, to make requests and gather information, we need to think about how much we use it. Striving to use experience sharing communication at least 80% of the time will bring about a much richer experience for everyone involved.

Building Attention & Engagement | Find the Ball | RDI Activities for Autism & ADHD

When we observe something, we focus on something and ignore other things. For example, we listen to what someone is saying while ignoring other conversations and background noise.

Many children find paying attention difficult sometimes, especially if they’re very young, tired, hot, not feeling well or not interested in the task. It can also be difficult if children feel they can’t do the task or have been sitting still for too long, or when there are distracting things going on around them.

Paying attention is a key skill for learning. For example, children need to pay attention to a teacher’s instructions to be sure they’re doing things the right way. Children also need to be able to keep their attention on tasks to be able to learn.

This type of play gives your child whole-body exercise and helps them develop gross motor skills, but most importantly this is a fun activity in which the child would want to engage with you.
It can also be a chance for your child to explore their environment and interact with other people.

Building Focus with Variations & JND's - Catch & Throw - (RDI™ Activities for Autism & ADHD)

Children with autism & ADHD don't have an innate motivation for growth-seeking, rather they display a desire to maintain stability (they want everything to stay the same!) But what if you could help introduce change slowly and comfortably into your kid's lives in a way that made them not only embrace change but look forward to it?
