Why are Fad diets dangerous ?
What is a fad diet ? It’s a diet which becomes popular because it promises amazing weight loss in minimal time. It becomes a fad as invariably it is endorsed by a celebrity ( who gets paid to market it) and goes viral on social media.
Some popular diet plans are South beach, Atkin’s, Paleo, Vegan, Ketogenic, detox, weight watchers, Raw food diet etc. What do these diet plans have in common ? They are backed by people or corporations who care more about their profits than your health. These diets promise quick results , hence people are tempted to try them. Invariably most of these diets lack the nutrition that the body needs.
Pressure in Hollywood and Bollywood to stay thin leads celebrities to attempt these diets in the public eye. However we only see the glamorous side of these people and do not know the negative effects of these diets on them. Social media also allows for unfiltered display of information. Anything can be written or advertised without scientific backing. Young people are the biggest users of social media. These fad diets can be doubly dangerous on young adults as it can lead to a lifetime of unhealthy habits and eating disorders.
Social media also plays a huge role in the popularity of such fads. Sites like Instagram, Facebook and Twitter allow for an unfiltered display of information. Pretty much anything can be posted and seen, and there is no requirement for scientific facts to back up what is being advertised. Young people are the biggest users of social media, and also the most impressionable age group. These diets can be twice as dangerous to someone at an influential age, and if left unchanged, could lead to lifelong unhealthy habits and even eating disorders.
Take the example of an All fruit diet which promises huge amount of weight loss in a week . Fruit is good for you but it does not contain everything that your body requires to function properly. It excludes protein and fats. While the sugar in fruits is natural, it can overload the pancreas which release insulin to control sugar in the body. Besides, this type of diet delivers less than 500 calories a day which is significantly insufficient for the human body. The famous actor Ashton Kutcher tried it and had to be hospitalized due to headache, dizziness and drop in blood pressure.
It takes months and years to pile on the weight. You need to understand that it takes as long or even longer to shed it but more importantly manage it lifelong. No fad diet can give you that. Eat healthy, exercise regularly and practice moderation. This is the only recipe for sustained weight management !
