Sometimes we may experience sources of stress for a prolonged period of time or the source may be intense and challenge the resources available to us to deal with it. For example, there may be no rooms available to rent even after making several attempts at hunting, or your employer is expecting the report tomorrow but you need more time. We may find it difficult to resolve the problem for several reasons, or may not be able to modulate our emotions like we may have in other situations.

Prolonged and intense distress can start affecting other areas of our life. This post talks about some of these. In the next post, we will talk about some ways you can cope with such
distress.

Often, when we use the term stress, we keep something called distress in mind. Distress is the response to a stressor that may be related to negative psychological and physiological stress. However, when we believe that we have control and resources to manage a stressor, we may be responding with eustress, which is related to positive psychological and physiological states. In this post you can see some of them.

However, the experience of eustress or attempts to tap into eustress may depend on multiple factors, and may differ from person to person and from one situation to the other. Sometimes, we may experience both eustress and distress for the same situation; depending on how we perceive the situation.

Acculturation stress can show up in many ways. These include:

1. Performance Difficulties: Difficulties performing at a new workplace or having barriers such as difficulties with language and lack of resources.

2. Mental Health Challenges: Finding oneself in a new culture can result in feelings of loneliness, or in some cases, anxiety and depression. This is also referred to as culture shock.

3. Physical Health Challenges: Physical health challenges are usually associated with mental health concerns such as decreased immunity, getting sick often and a lack of self-care.

4. Reverse Culture Shock: Usually, transitioning into a new culture involves unlearning characteristics from our ‘old culture’ or having to balance multiple cultures at one go. This makes it quite difficult to return back to our ‘original’ cultures, causing what is known as reverse culture shock.
