Indian summers and the heat brings on the surge in cases of viral flus and infections .
Prominent among them are the recent spurt of hand-foot-mouth (HFM) virus and of H1N1 cases which is creating panic amongst people.

Symptoms :range from :upper respiratory symptoms of cold , sore throats , coughs and body aches to high fevers with chills.
Many patients even complain an odd discomfort in the stomach. Loss of appetite and weakness with lethargy is also a concomitant symptom.
HFM ( hand-foot-mouth) also has symptoms of rashes or blisters on the hands or / and feet and ulcers in the mouth. Orifices become red and inflamed.

Steps to take care of one self and prevent the spread of the flu to the family and in the community are :

With seasonal flu, people may be contagious from one day before they develop symptoms to up to 7 days after they get sick. Children, especially younger children, might potentially be contagious for longer periods.

If you are sick, you may be ill for a week or longer. You should stay home and keep away from others as much as possible.
Stay home for at least 24 hours after your fever is gone except to get medical care or for other necessities. (Your fever should be gone without the use of fever-reducing medicine.) Keep away from others as much as possible. This is to prevent from making others sick.

If you are sick and sharing a common space with other household members in your home, wear a facemask, if available and tolerable, to help prevent spreading the virus to others.

Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.

As a preventive :

Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. .
Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. Germs spread this way.
Try to avoid close contact with sick people.
Light exercises , healthy nutritious diet , keeping oneself hydrated and good restful sleep : all vital to buck up the immunity.

Homeopathic Anti virals :
Known to help in warding off viral flus and its effects.
Help in reducing the severity of the infection.
Hasten cure and help in recovery.

Time to usher in summer and days turn dry and hot ; and this usually a time when we need to take extra precautions to ensure that we do not end up catching any bacteria that may lead to infections or viruses as well as allergic reactions to the spring pollen !
Common cold and flu is a common occurrence during such times. Seasonal changes are usually known to cause flu and cold, which can also come with chills, sneezing, cough and fever.
Here are a few tips to help you :
Avoid chilled food when your body is over heated.
Eat seasonal and locally grown fruits and veggies.
Load up on coconut water or buttermilk.
Keep washing your hands frequently .
Wear a mask in dusty places.
Exercise and stay healthy and strong!

Few tips at the beginning of a common cold :
Salt water gargles and rock salt steam twice a day.
Avoid refrigerated food or deep fried foods.
Load up on warm soups. Hydrate.
Rest it out!!

An evening spent up with sessions .. A gentle rain and some soft breeze ... Enough for an power outage and no power or lights in the clinic ... Only the single light in the background supported by a single ups powered plug...
When everything was lighted up , this single light was a part of the whole jazz...
without its own definition , lost in the brighter lights ...
When it's dark , this light gets its moment of glory ..
It becomes solely responsible for lighting up the space around it.. Giving clarity and meaning ... Guiding me ;unfaltering and sure towards the right medicine ......and path..

Our lifestyle that keeps us cooped indoors and inside our cars ..
Lack of open spaces ..
All reasons for deficiency or insufficiency of vitamin D , it's like a modern age epidemic ..

One of the main reasons of aches and pains in the bones , tiredness and easy exhaustion , feeling low and lack of enthusiasm ..

Though pills and supplements may help temporarily, one needs to get that dose of sunlight whenever possible ! And get a sitting with a nutritionist if severe...
Plan on stretching and strengthening workouts !
Stock up on green leafy veggies , nuts and fish ( or fish oils) ..

Nostalgia of an uncomplicated life....

As I wait for my little girls to come back from school ...a sudden flashback of my childhood .. Running back from the school , climbing up the stairs and throwing the shoes to run inside and check on Amma ...who would be in the kitchen cooking up an evening snack ....
She did not look up or turn towards me..but I know she is smiling ..she may have never asked how was your day...but we would prattle away about what the day was like.. She did not ask us about homework or projects ..but things were always ready and we just had to follow her wordless guidance ...
Simple evening pleasures of playing with friends, a late evening study time ,and then a family prayer time followed by dinner. A half an hour tv or radio and lying down on the bed listening to the soft sounds of the kitchen getting redone for a new tomorrow ...

What has changed ...am I a generation believing we need to show my children how and where to look .. Give them a million choices to feel like a 'successful' parent ...? A need to entertain them constantly ..a worry that they have to catch up and be at par with other children ...?

Till there was a power failure on a rainy day told me that ..... my children too would love a day like mine!

Snack on some nice roasted chickpeas ( Channa) and jaggery ...

Have been working on joint and bone strengthening workouts for women.

Support.

In the gym ... A trainer almost trips over many dumb bells scattered on the floor ..left carelessly by members .. Who believe in - 'I pay and hence am entitled to be messy' ... Two young college kids help the trainer sort out and keep the equipment back ..

At the signal , amidst terrible jam in the city ...a young traffic cop and two auto drivers manage to divert the traffic to lesser busy roads ...

I see a shopkeeper distribute all the extra pillows/ bedsheets/ chairs from a wedding venue to a workers family in the construction site next door..

A thought :
Support.
Hold out a hand to someone who needs just a hand to hold on to ...
Like this tree...
Let another receive your hug and hold on till they feel they can let go and still be fine...

Hold your stance ... and breathe ...

12 sun salutations....

My plan :
Started with 3 Surya Namaskars;
holding each position in sun salutation for 3 breaths.
Increased 1 breath each day,1 salutation each day.
So on the last day it's was 12 salutations and upto 15 breaths in each position ...

A thought ...
Hold your stance ...you might feel resistance or get distracted or feel tired and ready to give up and crumple ...but focus on the depth of your breaths and keep counting your salutations and hold your stance ...

You might face criticism or comments about your methods, voices which intend to weaken your resolve ....but focus on the depth of your breath and count your strengths ...

One day at a time , one breath more to achieve ....one more salutation of resolve and gratitude ...

Hope ....

The Story of A leaf...

A leaf falls...

Do the other leaves wonder why it left , does the branch think ' I tried to grasp it tight!' , and does the tree cry out , ' She was mine..!' ' How could she leave...!'
Do they blame the wind or do they whisper ' it was time ....'

Is life and people who enter it like this ...
Once a purpose is served , are they supposed to fade away ...

And a thought...
Does the leaf decide to come back to the same branch it left ..greener and renewed ?
Do people who pass on , revisit in the same branch as new leaves...
Does it make one feel good that whoever goes away , always find their way back to be close to you ...?

Hope makes its way into my thoughts ... a falling leaf is just a phase ... another new leaf is sprouting ...and revisiting my branch again ..!
