Rotary, Bangalore-TTK Blood Bank has been providing Blood banking & Transfusion services to hospitals & patients in Bangalore and surrounding districts since 1984. From a small blood bank with a collection and issue of around 5000 units of Whole Blood in 1984, we have come a long way. We are now a large Blood Component facility and Regional Blood Transfusion Centre,Karnataka, with a proven track record for providing quality services and safe blood components. Arun Kumar Day Care Centre to help Thalassemia patients avoid the cost and effort of admission into a hospital setting. Here Thalassemia, Hemophilia and other such Transfusion-dependant patients are given free blood transfusions. In 2010 we added the Thalassemia Control program of screening and genetic counselling as a free service to relatives of Thalassemics. The Transplant Immunology (HLA) laboratory was added in 2001 as an extension of the Immunohematology arm of the blood bank. Named after Rtn. PDG.P.T. Kasturi, the founding Chairman of BMST, the HLA laboratory carries out the specialized tests required for both Solid Organ as well as Bone Marrow Transplantation cases all over Karnataka. In 2010 BMST set up a Tissue Bank, the first of its kind in Karnataka, and one of a few in India. The goodwill with hospitals all over the State, helped us source Bone and amnion from their patients. Presently we provide Bone & Amniotic membrane allografts for clinical use and plan to expand to include other tissues. For several thousands of patients with Leukemia, Aplastic Anemia, Thalassemia and so on, the only hope for a cure is a Bone Marrow Transplantation. In 2009 Rotary Bangalore-TTK Blood Bank initiated the Stem Cell Registry-India project to tap into its large base of young, well educated voluntary blood donors and motivate them to register as potential Bone Marrow donors. Already, more than 5000 of them have joined the registry, with potential to expand every year. We do specific Community programs centered on health awareness building and education, Training & capacity building. Though essentially a service organization we also carryout research projects
BMST is founded on principles of strong values, ethical practice and commitment to social responsibility. We therefore:
Strive to constantly improve the Quality and safety of our products & services. Provide blood, tissues, laboratory and other services at subsidized or at no cost at all to deserving patients. Respect the privacy of donors & patients and maintain total confidentiality and provide donor disclosure, counselling
and referral services. Treat donors, patients and their relatives with utmost courtesy and empathy. Treat our stakeholders including donors; patients, employees, suppliers and end-users equally and do not discriminate
on the basis of gender, sexual orientation, disability, HIV status, religion, caste, ethnic, or socio-economic status. Do not tolerate acts of sexual harassment, related retaliation or false complaints of sexual harassment against or by any
employee. Apply general principles of safety, bio-hazard handling and disposal of waste to all areas and activities in order to protect our personnel, patients and the community at large against diseases transmitted through blood and other body fluids.

It is unusual for Bangalore to have less blood collection than desired in summer months.

It may be summer.
It may be the holiday season.
It may be hybrid working.

And Bangalore always maintains the blood stock required.

Come forward, you people.

A lady lost all 3 babies after they were born because of a rare blood group (minor). If she had known about her blood group, the babies could have been saved.

There are major blood groups.
There are minor blood groups.
There is an interplay.

Then there is a dimension of marriages within the family members in certain communities which perpetuates this condition.

The team form Laos was headed by Dr. Chirapha Keokhamphoui, Deputy Director of Blood center and the other two members from the quality department were Dr. Vanviloun Saykocie & Dr. Vongkeng Phanvansa.

They underwent training for the Fundamental Standards for Blood Collection & Transfusion, 1st edition, AABB.

They observed all the technical areas from blood donation process till component issue.

Our team was headed by Dr. Ankit Mathur, Additional Medical Director and the other members were Dr. Soumee Banerjee, Mr. Vijay Reddy & Mr. Santanu Chakraborty

AABB, then was, American Association of Blood Banks.

AATM (Asian Association of Transfusion Medicine) belonging to the same ecosystem of Transfusion Medicine, was looking for a blood centre to provide AABB Certification to blood centres in India.

The AATM President offered whether we could begin the pilot project.

We started the program in September 2020
Submitted the required documentation & details by February 2021
Got the quality certificate, the first one outside USA in July 2021

We were proud & humbled at the same time.

The work involves increasing the blood safety and improving blood transfusion services to ensure both blood donors’ and patients’ safety.

AABB President’s Awards are bestowed each year and honors “extraordinary public service and contributions of an individual or an organization in the health care arena”.

14 people were chosen for the honur this year representing a wide variety of geographic locations and practice types within the blood and biotherapies field and have worked on some of our community’s most notable initiatives.

There were
10 from the USA,
2 from Ukraine,
1 from Zambia and
1 from India.

It is heartening to note that Dr. Latha is one among a very few Indians to have gotten this recognition.

KIMS Hubballi hosted an event on October 5th 2023 to announce the launch of Transplant Immunology Lab in its premises.

Dr. Venkatesh Moger, HoD – Nephrology, KIMS Hubballi said

“This lab saves more than 12 hours of agonizing time for the patients who used to travel to Bangalore for giving the blood samples for organ transplant.

This also lends dignity for the organ donor whose family need not wait for long hours to claim the body in cases of donation from a cadaver – brain dead patient”

It was Dr. Venkatesh Moger's thought way back in 2017 - 18 to have the lab in North Karnataka to make it easy for the patients waiting for organ transplants.

This thought alone, put us on an orbit, after COVID, to pursue this request.

KIMS stakeholders were more than generous to provide the space for the lab at no cost.

ttk_prestige & TE Connectivity backed the project with the equipment required

Being a Not-for-profit entity, the lens used was not that of Return On Investment but Social Return On Investment !

Over 6 lakh blood donors in 40 years

Yes. Over a million patients who got blood components when they required it.

They didn't have to go through the anxiety of calling potential blood donors to donate blood.

It has been possible because of voluntary blood donors spread across in colleges and industries in Bangalore and surrounding districts.

Thank you for the love.
Thank you for being generous.
Thank you for making a difference.

Very heartening to know this.

On one hand is the number of patients impacted & on the other is the quality of lives of these patients and their family members.

These families will be brand ambassadors for spreading the word for organ donation.

Let this tribe grow.
