🦴 Raising Awareness for Osteogenesis Imperfecta on Rare Disease Day 2025 🦴
On this Rare Disease Day (28th February 2025), let’s shed light on Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI), commonly known as brittle bone disease—a rare genetic disorder affecting bone strength and overall mobility. 💙
OI is caused by mutations in collagen-producing genes, leading to fragile bones that break easily, even from minor falls or without any apparent cause. Beyond fractures, individuals with OI may experience loose joints, weak teeth (dentinogenesis imperfecta), hearing loss, and respiratory issues due to weak connective tissues. While there is no cure, early diagnosis, physiotherapy, medications, and surgical interventions help manage the condition and improve the quality of life.
💡 What Can We Do?
✅ Spread awareness about this lesser-known orthopaedic condition
✅ Advocate for better research, diagnosis, and treatment options
✅ Support individuals with OI by fostering an inclusive and understanding environment
As an Orthopaedic Surgeon specializing in Knee & Shoulder Treatments, I believe that increased awareness can lead to early detection, better care, and improved mobility for those affected by OI. Let’s join hands in making healthcare more accessible for those living with rare diseases.
