Sickle Cell Anemia is a severe hereditary form of anemia in which a mutated form of hemoglobin distorts the red blood cells into a crescent shape at low oxygen levels. It is a genetic disorder that requires lifelong management. The abnormal cells impede normal blood flow, leading to various complications, including chronic pain and other serious conditions affecting the heart, lungs, and numerous other organs.

Sickle Cell Anemia is caused by a genetic mutation in the HBB gene responsible for hemoglobin production. Hemoglobin allows red blood cells to carry oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body. In Sickle Cell Anemia, the abnormal hemoglobin forms rods upon deoxygenation, making the cells rigid and sickle-shaped, leading to various complications. It's inherited in an autosomal recessive pattern, meaning a child must receive two defective copies of the gene, one from each parent, to develop the disease.
